Beer-lesque

The Vintage Variety Show You've Been Waiting For

"A night of sensory overload," states Naughty Pierre, the emcee for Beer Week's Beerlesque. Pierre continues, "A lively blend of brand new craft beers, old-fashioned burlesque dancing, and off-the-wall comedy."

Beer-lesque will showcase five Deschutes Brewery beers, each with an accompanying performance created to thematically match that beer. To whet your whistle for the show, the Source provides its first ever Beerlesque Beer-Burlesque Matching Game.

Influenced by Mongolian and Russian performance styles, Brittany Walsh is an acrobat and contortionist who can shoot an arrow using only her feet. Walsh began her career as a gymnast in high school and, when offered a job with a physical theater company, she knew college could wait. She has performed from Europe to Broadway to Las Vegas, in a show the New York Times has fawned over as, "Beautiful, exciting and fun!" (Hint: Just like her favorite beer, she packs a punch at just five feet tall, and is sure to knock you on your ass.)

Baby Le'Strange came to burlesque dancing by way of roller derby. Several years ago, she attended a burlesque class with a bunch of her gals she knew from roller derby. It was love at first sight. She has been performing since, and now the student has even become the master; she currently teaches at the Rose City School of Burlesque. She will perform her signature hot dog number and her chipmunk act, which has a nutty surprise. (We didn't ask any further questions.)

Jefferson Acra (a.k.a., Naughty Pierre) has been emceeing beer-lesque shows for nearly a decade. Deschutes Brewery discovered Pierre performing a weekly beer-lesque show in Denver three years ago, and ever since he has been bringing the unique pairing to the Pacific Northwest. Describing himself as looking like a cross between Wayne Newton and Liberace, Naughty Pierre loves his beer and whiskey in that order, and prefers to alternate them one after the other. (Hint: His beer pairing is like his comedy, "fresh.")

Black Butte Porter: Winner of the Source's Readers' Choice "Best Dark Beer," this is the standard for porter; rich, smooth and as reliable as William Tell.

Freshly Squeezed IPA: A lightweight among other hop-heavy Northwest IPAs that often flirt with the 100-IBU mark, this is Deschutes' special summer IPA. Backloaded with taste and pleasant orange and lemon scents, light and easy, but nothing to laugh about.

Pine Mountain Pilser: Rich and golden, with a hint of mountain air and pine trees, the beer also has surprise pepper spices.
