Our Picks 06/01-06/07

This weeks picks we are sure you will enjoy.

First Friday Art Walk

friday 1

There’s the art, there’s the walking—what’s not to love? We strongly recommend visiting the Oxford Hotel to peruse the Lives on the Line exhibit we profile in our Culture section this week. While you’re there take a listen to Christian Lindquist on the harp and check out his custom furniture pieces. Old Mill and Northwest Crossing are getting in on the First Friday action these days, too. You’ll find live music and other festivities in those locales. 5 to 9 p.m. Friday. Downtown Bend, Old Mill and Northwest Crossing.

Little Owl and Hawkmeat

saturday 2

Indie-pop from Santa Barbara, Little Owl is bright and polished surf rock with elements of ambient electro and nuanced song structures. Their music will make you want to frolic through the woods on a sunny afternoon. Local singer/songwriter Bill More, aka Hawkmeat, opens. Check out the next page for more on his fiery sad songs. $5. 8pm. The Horned Hand, 507 NW Colorado Ave.

BendFilm Bash

saturday 2

The tickets for this benefit are a bit spendy, but the live music, gourmet food, cocktails and sweet things should help you part with your cash. It’s also a chance to rub elbows with Bend’s social elite AND you should be supporting one of Bend’s raddest events. Go to www.bendfilm.org for tickets. $40. 6:30 to 10 p.m., Old Ironworks District, 50 Scott St. Ste 2

Ray Wylie Hubbard

sunday 3

Twangy progressive country music from a genre master. Ray Wylie Hubbard released his first record over 40 years ago and has been writing and touring ever since. Hubbard’s best known work is the drunken country anthem "Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother" popularized by Jerry Jeff Walker in the early ‘70s. His own performances are packed with folk and blues influence and experience. $25, includes dinner. 6pm. All ages. The Sound Garden, 279 NE 2nd St.

Farmers Market

wednesday 6 and friday 8

The farmers market is back! Here’s what you’ll find there: gorgeous fruits, vegetables, herbs, flowers and locally-made products in attractive baskets; beautiful people smiling at each other because it’s finally summer; and the gratifying knowledge that you are building community and supporting local farmers. All good things. 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays through Oct. 10 in the Brooks Street Alleyway downtown, and 2 to 6 p.m. Fridays through Sept. 28 at St. Charles Medical Center in the parking lot next to Neff Road.

Amy Lavere

wednesday 6

This woman looks and sounds sexy. Her super smoky vocals, slightly raunchy/slightly kitten stage presence, occasionally continental feel and the hard rock undercurrent of her trusty band make this a show well worth getting out of the house for. All ages. Free. 7pm. Father Luke Room, McMenamins Old St. Francis School, 700 NW Bond St.

Asleep at the Wheel

thursday 7

A nine-time Grammy award winning crew of Texans, Asleep at the Wheel is known for smoking hot swing riffs. With more than 20 studio albums released over their 40-plus year career, their music is refined and reminiscent of a hootin' and hollerin’ drunken square dance. Founder Ray Benson may very well be the tallest cowboy with the deepest voice in Texas, towering over his band mates at a staggering six foot seven inches with size 16 EEE boots. $38-50. 8pm. Tower Theater, 835 Northwest Wall Street.

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)

thursday 7-sunday 24

For the MTV generation, which doesn’t have the attention span to sit through the full works of The Bard, this abridged version of his work involves three actors covering 37 plays in 90 minutes. Local actors Alastair Morley Jaques, Clint Clark and Skye Stafford take on what sounds like a drunken challenge, “Hey bro, I bet you can’t make Shakespeare short and interesting.” Titus Andronicus as a cooking show, Othello as a rap song and The Histories as a football game are just a few of the hilarious reductions you can expect. $10 for preview at 7:30 p.m. June 7. $15 for adults, $12 seniors/students, 7:30pm Wednesdays through Saturdays June 8 through June 23. 6pm June 10 through June 24. Innovation Theatre Works, 1155 SW Division St.

Sisters Rodeo

wednesday 6- sunday 10

Yee-haw! Time to load up the fam and get dusty. This is one of the pure and simple good ol’ time events in Central Oregon with bull riding, steer wrestling, bareback riding and a few parades for good measure. The cowboys everywhere aren’t too hard on the eyes, either, ladies. Plus, you know you’ve been looking for an excuse to wear that ridiculous cowboy hat. See www.sistersrodeo.com for more ticket and scheduling information. Sisters Rodeo Grounds, 67637 Highway 20.
