Our Picks 11/5 - 11/13

thursday 7-sunday 10

Nature of Words Festival

LITERATURE—Pulling together his family's history as Japanese-Americans—including years spent in an interment camp—with a budding love for jazz music, Lawson Inada is a remarkable, and distinctly American, poet. Today, he headlines the annual Nature of Words Festival. (For more information, see pg. 33.) For full event schedule see thenatureofwords.org; Lawson Inada speaks at noon today, Central Oregon Community College, Wille Hall, Campus Center, $25.

friday 8

Freak Mountain Ramblers

MUSIC—The Portland bluegrass-rock crew has been around a while, getting its start with Jeffrey Frederick and the Clamtones, a legendary band that dominated Portland's bluegrass scene in the early '70s. Thirty-plus years later, the band (minus a few of the originals) still plays weekly sets at the Laurelthirst Public House, its own hippie, jam-grass version of church. 7 pm. McMenamins, 700 NW Bond St. Free.

friday 8

Dela Project

MUSIC—Bend's Billy Mickelson, the one-man cello-playing loop artist, is back and—lucky for us—is kicking off an extensive western states tour with his band Dela Project right here at home. The special show will also feature Portland's Kat Jones and Reno's Six Mile Station. 8 pm. Silver Moon Brewing, 24 NW Greenwood Ave. 21+. No cover, donations accepted.

saturday 9

Sledfilm

MOVIE—It is like a ski movie, but for Republicans! Yee-HAW! Sledfilm bundles together some of the best, most rocking, gravity-defying flips, jumps, deep powder, tree slalom, wild riding snowmobile action. Two hours of extreme fun that will have you racing home to tune your carburetor and praying for snow. 6 pm. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St. $6.

saturday 9

One Beard to Rule Them All

BEARDS—Show off your mane or cheer on your favorite Hulihee beard (look it up). Silver Moon is hosting the area's biggest real—and fake—beard competition (mustaches work, too). Aside from creative facial hair, expect live music, delicious beers and food from Blue Pine and Mother's Café. 6 pm. Silver Moon Brewing, 24 NW Greenwood Ave. No cover.

saturday 9

Benefit Show for Morgan P. Salvo

MUSIC—All-around nice guy (and, full disclosure, Source delivery driver) Wayne Newcome (aka Morgan P. Salvo) needs help covering recent health expenses. Luckily, VTP, where he often performs with his band Problem Stick, is throwing Newcome a fundraiser with some of our favorite local acts: Don Quixote, Silvero, Wilderness and more. 3 pm. Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Dr. $10 suggested donation.

saturday 9

Monster Truck Nationals

BIG TRUCKS—As tall as his monster truck wheels, Jimmy Cretin is one of the leading drivers on the circuit, often taking the wheel for the car-crushing, chassis-bouncing Bounty Hunter. This weekend, he gathers with some of the most fearless drivers in the country for a rip-roaring, take-no-prisoners show. 6 pm. Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center, 3800 SW Airport Way, Redmond, $12 advance, $15 door.

monday 11

Media Salon Pie-Off

PIES—While turkey may be the main event, pumpkin and apple pies are the starred attractions for the holidays. Over the past few weeks, we have curated the best pie recipes in the region, and tonight our judges dig in to declare the GREATEST PIE IN CENTRAL OREGON. Bring your own fork! 7 pm. Broken Top Bottle Shop, 1740 NW Pence Lane. Free.

wednesday 13

Spaghetti Western Wednesdays

FILM—They're back! One night a week Tin Pan offers up dinner: plates overflowing with delicious saucy spaghetti, crispy garlic bread, a fresh salad and a movie—a shoot-'em-up western flick—for less than $10! Be sure to arrive early, the theater only seats about 30 cowpokes. 6 pm. Tin Pan Theater, 869 NW Tin Pan Alley. $6, plus one drink.

thursday 14

Paul Barrere & Fred Tackett of Little Feat

MUSIC—Remember Little Feat? That L.A. folk rock band from the '70s that sounded a bit like The Band and was famous for "Dixie Chicken?" They were awesome (Jimmy Page once declared Little Feat his favorite American band). See two of LF's oldest members pick a guitar and a mandolin and sing the favorites. 7:30 pm. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St. $35-$45.
