Our Picks 12/10-12/18

thursday 11

Zepparella

ROCK—Robert Plant's new album, Lullaby and...The Ceaseless Roar, is considered by critics a step away from his incendiary work with Led Zeppelin. However, despite his change of pace many fans won't ever let the II, III, IV era die, including the ladies of Zepparella, a female tribute to the legacy of the heavy metal band. See them rock. 8 pm. The Belfry, 302 E. Main St. Sisters. $20.

friday 12

Dirksen Derby Kickoff

PARTY—What has become the de facto early season snowboarder party, the 8th annual Dirksen Derby kicks off this evening with music, giveaways and an art auction of mini-murals painted on, what else, snowboards. For more complete rundown of Derby activities, check out Outside, pg. 40. 6 pm. Midtown, 51 N. Greenwood Ave. $5 suggested.

saturday 13

Zombies vs. Unicorns

DERBY—Last year, the Unicorns pranced and jabbed their way to victory over the lifeless Zombies in a highly attended Renegade Roller Derby bout. Now, the two teams go head to horn to see if the Zombies can come back from the dead to take those fancy horses down a notch. Doors at 6pm, bout at 7pm. Midtown Ballroom, 51 NW Greenwood Ave. $10 in advance, kids under 10 free.

saturday 13

Local Holiday Bazaars

GIFTS—Old Ironworks and Central Oregon Locavore are putting their crafty heads together for a holiday shopping extravaganza. A free shuttle will taxi shoppers between Craft-O and the Locavore Holiday Gift Faire. Each location will have locally-made gifts, food, and music. Craft-O. 10 am-6 pm. The Old Ironworks, 50 SE Scott St. Locavore Holiday Gift Faire. 10 am-4 pm. Old Stone Church, 157 NW Franklin Ave. Free admission.

saturday 13

Winter Beer Fest

BEER—With a primary focus on winter ales, the inaugural Central Oregon Winter Beer Festival remedies an overdue problem: No wintertime beer festivals! More than a dozen local breweries are participating, including Deschutes, Silver Moon, Boneyard. Host-brewery GoodLife is producing a Puffy Coat Porter and River Bend is bringing a Winter Mint Stout. 1-9 pm. GoodLife Bierhall, 70 SW Columbia Dr. $10 (for four tokens).

sunday 14

Second Sunday: Fractured Fairy Tales and Myths

POETRY—Award-winning Bend poets Judith Montgomery and Suzanne Burns explore the darker side of common tales and mythical notions, from "Hansel and Gretel" to death itself. Montgomery received the 2000 Oregon Book Award and Burns won the 2013 Diagram Innovative Fiction Prize. Though the two don't write together, their poetry touches on similar themes. An open mic will follow the reading. 2 pm. Downtown Bend Library, Free.monday 15

Smokey Brights

INDIE—With David Bowie-like starscape compositions mixed with Joy Division's shoe gaze, Seattle band Smokey Brights are polished and wry indie rockers with ear-tickling pop hooks. They call themselves "vintage rock," which accounts for some of their reverb-heavy guitar riffs and Motown-inspired ballads. 9 pm. Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Dr. $5.

tuesday 16

Elf

FILM—The 2003 film Elf capped off a remarkable breakout year for Will Ferrell, and picks up the common holiday thread of an awkward but earnest misfit (um, Rudolf?) trying to find his way in the jaded world—and, yes, it is still funny to watch him duet "Baby, It's Cold Outside." 6 pm. Tin Pan Theater, 869 NW Tin Pan Alley. Free.

wednesday 17

Morning Ritual with The Shook Twins

FOLK—A collaborative mash-up of composer Ben Darwish and twin singers, Katelyn and Laurie Shook, Portland's Morning Ritual is a match made in folk music heaven. Darwish brings a new dreaminess (and keyboards!) to the sisters' pop-savvy standards, but the music retains all of the sweet singing and hand-in-glove harmonies that the ladies have proven is their specialty. 7 pm. The Belfry, 302 E. Main St. Sisters. $12.

wednesday 17

Die Hard

FILM—Badass Bruce Willis battles a bevy of evil German terrorists who have taken a holiday party hostage, and in the process he learns the True Meaning of Christmas—that is, to kick some bad guy butt, start up a bi-racial friendship and reconcile with his large-haired wife. Presented by the Source, and includes holiday surprises! 7 pm. Old Stone, 157 NW Franklin. Free.
