Our Picks 3/6-3/12 | The Source Weekly - Bend, Oregon

thursday 6

World Goes Round

THEATER—The musical genius of John Kander and Fred Ebb (the song-writing team behind Cabaret, Chicago, and Kiss of the Spider Woman) is amassed in a hodgepodge mix tape for musical theater nerds. Enjoy recognizable songs including "Mr. Cellophane" and "My Coloring Book." 7:30 pm. 2nd Street Theater, 220 NE Lafayette. Through March 9. $19-22.

thursday 6

Anna and the Underbelly

MUSIC—Anna Tivel, as in the Anna in Anna and the Underbelly, has a remarkable voice, a paradox really; reedy, echoy and delicate that yet is giant and expansive, filling her clever tales and songs with wistfulness and hopefulness. With the plucky and sweet-toned Nathaniel Talbot and easy-going Jeffrey Martin. 7 pm. The Belfry, 302 E. Main St. $10.

friday 7

Hong Kong Banana/ First Friday

MUSIC—If we had to guess, we would say Hong Kong Banana loves Pavement and The Pixies. Read: they love sounding intentionally imperfect and effervescently '90s. Join the Portland group for a First Friday celebration adjacent to downtown's free wine, music and art. 6 pm. Crow's Feet Commons, 875 NW Brooks St. Free.

saturday 8

Muse Conference

INSPIRATION—Hey Ladies (and gentlemen too), round II of the MUSE Women's empowerment conference is on, with esteemed keynote speakers Zainab Salbi, Amy Richards and Lynne Twist. On Sunday, presenters will offer a full day of interactive workshops with local and global creators of social change. 9:30 am. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St. $75. Sign up for workshops at museconference.org/workshops. $35 each.

saturday 8

One Model Oregon

FASHION SHOW—Mining the modeling talent of Central Oregon, One Model hosts its final fashion show in which it announces the winner of Bend's "Top Model"-style competition. Local designers, local music and local models team up to do a little turn on the catwalk. 6 pm. Riverhouse Convention Center, 3075 Hwy. 97. $12. Photo by Tambi Lane.

saturday 8

Wilderness, Beautiful Trainwrecks, The Cabin Project

LOTS OF MUSIC—The Portland-based, Beautiful Trainwrecks is pulled along by soaring vocals—and, no, it is far from a wreck, more like a string of americana boxcars filled with happy, banjo-picking hobos, drum thumping conductors and link in a dining car with Guitar Heroes serving up soaring anthem chords, all chugging along in perfect harmony. With Wilderness and The Cabin Project. 9 pm. Volcanic Theatre, 70 SW Century. $5.

sunday 9

OUTDOOR EQUIPMENT—Get ready for summer. Heck, get ready to go camping tomorrow. The 14th Annual Sportsman's Show is a smorgasbord of camping, fishing and hiking equipment, with hundreds of vendors for backyard campers to hardcore survivalists. The only drawback? They only deal in cash and credit; no trading of animal pelts. Noon–8 pm, Thurs-Sat; 10 am-4 pm, Sun. Deschutes County Expo Center, 3800 SW Airport Way, Redmond. $10 adults one-day, $15 two-day pass.

monday 10

The Science of Beer Media Salon

MEDIA SALON—With as much wit and charm as Jimmy Fallon, the Source continues its early evening show, The Media Salon, with a focus on "The Science of Beer." Beer-making tips from Tom Gilles from Platypus Pub, specialty hops insights from Worthy Brewery's Roger Worthington, and Ale Apothecary's head brewer Paul Arney talking about wild yeast fermentation. 7 pm. Broken Top Bottle Shop, 1740 NW Pence Lane. Free!

tuesday 11

The Blaqks

ROCK—The first track on The Blaqks' 2013 record Funeral Party is entitled "1972," which is the year that the hammering distorted baseline seems to be flying though time and space from. The opening scream of "God Damn," from singer Danny Blaqk (real name Cary Judd) is a rock and roll staple and enough to make even the squarest-square do a little head banging. 9 pm. Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Dr. $5.

wednesday 12

The Marvins

MUSIC—Lace up your cowboy boots before you arrive, because The Marvins wait for no one! Actually, that's not true. They are very pleasant. But their music? It moves at breakneck speed, double-time bass plucking racing Eddie Van Halen fast guitar chords and quick-tongued lyrics; it is like Americana rap! 7 pm. McMenamins, 700 NW Wall. Free.
