Our Picks 7/1-7/8

thursday 2 – saturday 4

La Pine Frontier Days

PARTY—While it is doubtful that any of the contestants in the lawn mower race will reach the world record speed of 116 mph, the annual race is one of the roaring events happening for the Fourth. Other events include: apple pie competitions and a beard & mustache competition.

10 am – 7 pm. 16405 1st St., La Pine.

Free admission.

saturday 4

Pet Parade

ANIMALS—Begin Independence Day with a Bend tradition of dressing up four-legged friends and parading them downtown. Unfortunately, cats, rabbits, and aggressive dogs should be left at home, but stuffed animals are more than welcome! Expect popsicles, a decorating party, and lots of cute dogs!

10 am. Downtown Bend, corner of Wall Street and Idaho Avenue. Free.

saturday 4

Old Fashion 4th of

July Festival

CELEBRATE—After the Pet Parade, continue the fun with a good-old family-friendly Fourth festival. Kids and adults alike can enjoy old-fashioned games, such as a three-legged race, music from local bands, a pie eating contest, and a whole lot of red, white, and blue! 11 am. Drake Park, 777 NW Riverside Blvd. Free.

saturday 4

Freedom Ride

BIKES—It is difficult for anything cool to stay under the radar forever—especially when the event takes over downtown, it's hard to stay completely incognito. The Freedom Ride has become an annual and unofficial tradition of hooting, hollering, and declaring freedom from all things. Oh, you, know. Starts in the afternoon. Around Pioneer Park. Free to be you and me.

sunday 5

Calico The Band

TURF TUNES—Calico, short for California country, is a trio of songwriters whose ballads capture the mythology of long drives through the deserts and canyons of that expansive state. With playful harmonies that roll and bounce like tumbleweeds, Calico's music is at once catchy and timeless. 5 pm. SHARC, 57250 Overlook Rd., Sunriver. No cover.

sunday 5

Fiber Art Stroll

QUILTS—The Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show celebrates its 40th anniversary this year with a host of events for fabric artists and fans alike. A highlight is the 12th Annual Fiber Arts Stroll, an opportunity for visitors to view and purchase works of fiber art on display in downtown shops. Noon-4 pm. Downtown Sisters. Free.

sunday 5

Cloverdayle

COUNTRY—Originally hailing from the Pacific Northwest, this now-Nashville based husband and wife duo plays radio-friendly country and has shared the stage with some of country music's biggest names, including Kenny Chesney, Lady Antebellum, Jason Aldean, Tim McGraw, Jake Owen, and Josh Turner. Not too shabby. 1 pm. Les Schwab Amphitheater, 344 SW Shevlin Hixon Dr. No cover.

tuesday 7

Wrenched

FILM—Radical environmentalist Edward Abbey is the subject of this film by M.L. Lincoln, who will be present for the screening. Featuring interviews with the likes of Robert Redford and including vintage footage, the film is a must-see for the environment's fiercest defenders, and those who aspire to join their ranks. 7 pm. Old Stone Church, 157 NW Franklin Ave. $5 suggested donation.

wednesday 8

Alive After Five:

Quarterflash

MUSIC—Although the Portland-based Quarterflash is best known for their 1981 saxophone and bass-drum heavy smash hit "Harden My Heart," their new songs have softened, but retain that melancholy of break-up. But still, I'd imagine they will dust off their early '80s hits for Alive After 5's kickoff. Right? 5 – 8 pm. Old Mill District, 450 SW Powderhouse Dr. No cover.

wednesday 8

McDougall

MUSIC—With no more hands or feet than given to the rest of us, McDougall manages to play more instruments than one human humanly should be able to—and creates a beautiful booming and clanging cacophony. But really, all that is background for spinning his yarns. 7 pm. McMenamins Old St Francis, 700 NW Bond St. No cover.
