Our Picks 7/24 - 8/1

wednesday 24

Alive After Five

MUSIC—Check out the feature (pg. 8) for more on the relevancy of free shows in Bend. Then, get out and see one. LeRoy Bell of LeRoy Bell and His Only Friends (all two of them) has written soft-rock billboard-topping hits for luminaries like Elton John. Sounds like: a less douchey John Mayer. Voodoo Highway opens. All ages. 5 pm. Old Mill District. Free.

thursday 25

The Soft White Sixties

MUSIC—The San Francisco band was voted among the top shows at SXSW 2013 for its solid, hair-flipping, soulful rock. And if we made a movie with an illicit drag race scene, "Queen of the Press Club" would be our first choice for the soundtrack. 9 pm. Silver Moon Brewing, 24 NW Greenwood Ave. $5.

friday 26

Brandon Antakk

HONKY TONK—The Nor-Cal lovechild of Hank III and David Allan Coe is as much new-school punk as he is old-school outlaw. His songs are simple and drinking is a central theme, but damn if they don't make for fun listening. Also, drinking. 21+. 9 pm. Astro Lounge, 939 NW Bond St. Free.

saturday 27

Son Volt

MUSIC—Do this: Put on Son Volt's mournful "Tear Stained Eye," walk out on the porch at twilight, crack a cold one, and think about an old lover as Uncle Tupelo founding member Jay Farrar weaves another lonesome tale through his simple but very recognizable acoustic guitar chords. 8 pm. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St. $26-37.50.

saturday 27

Broken Down Guitars

SUMMER MUSIC—While the Source has a strict policy to not promote white-people-with-dreadlock bands, we are making an exception for Broken Down Guitars, the winner of Bend's 2012 Last Band Standing competition. Although the name references the '70s-based folk band's stringed instruments—driving Southern rock guitar and occasional cat-scratching violin—it's Stacie Johnson's soaring vocals that pull together the eclectic music. 5 pm. Elk Lake Resort. Free.

sat 27 – sunday 28

Powder Shot Biathlon

RACE—Ever tried to shoot a bull's eye with a heart rate of 180? It's hard. But fun! Usually reserved for skiers, this summer biathlon is beginner-friendly, and participants can register the morning of the event (or at powdrshot.com). Trail running on Saturday, mountain bike race on Sunday—do one or both. Starts 9 am. Mt. Bachelor, 13000 Century Dr. $59+.

monday 29

Pop-Up Picnic

MUSIC—Another free concert series! El Burrito and The Cake Lady provide the eats (bring your own picnic basket). Plop down in the grass, eat, relax and let the mind drift as Brent Alan & Friends provide the bluesy-jammy backdrop. And bring a nonperishable item for NeighborImpact. 5 pm. The Cosmic Depot, 342 NE Clay St. Free.

wednesday 31

The Outsiders

SWAYZE SUMMER!—Directed by Francis Ford Coppola and starring Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Tom Cruise and Patrick Swayze, this seminal 1983 film, which pits The Greasers against the The Socs, provided a launching pad for more successful careers than we can shake a soda pop at. 8 pm, Old Stone Church, 157 NW Franklin Ave. Free!

wednesday 31

Polecat

MUSIC—NOT the red-eyed furry monster that lives under your deck, or a euphemism for an amateur stripper, Polecat is a three-piece Portland bluegrass band that's perfect for this month's Pickin' and Paddlin'. Profits from beer sales benefit the Bend Paddle Trail Alliance and its plan to trade in the Colorado spillway for a whitewater play park! 4 pm. Tumalo Creek & Kayak, 805 SW Industrial Way. $5.

thursday 1

Grateful Dead Meet Up

FILM—As Ken Kesey and Mountain Girl make pleas to support their Springfield Creamery, the Oregon connection to the Grateful Dead is in full force in this third installment of IMAX concert footage series, Grateful Dead Meet Up. Watch restored and spectacular footage from a 1972 concert, as the band, in its most earnest incarnation, performs at its peak. 7:30 pm, Old Mill Stadium 16 & IMAX, 680 SW Powerhouse Dr. $12.50.
