Cheap Trick and Kansas
ROCK—The rambunctious Cheap Trick, performing Wednesday, is just a warmup for Kansas (Saturday), whose graying members each have one foot in the grave. But the Americana revival makes the group surprisingly relevant again! And, yes, we all are dust in the wind. You can pick up free tickets at any Central Oregon McDonald's between 2-7 pm Wednesday. 7 pm start for both shows. Deschutes County Fairgrounds, 3800 SW Airport Way. Free, with fair admission.
friday 2
First Friday
ART & MUSIC—This month's First Friday Art Walk is forecast seasonably cool 77 degrees, perfect weather for a walk about downtown. We recommend stoping by Franklin Crossing, where the work of our featured cover artist, Angela Raines, will be on display (see pg. 33 for more). Our pick for music is Wilderness (7 pm at FootZone). 5 pm. Downtown Bend. Free.
friday 2
Chris Horner
PRESENTATION—One of America's fastest and most accomplished cyclists is from Central Oregon, and he's coming home to talk racing, training and leg shaving in advance of his annual Gran Fondo ride (see Sunday's pick). Although Chris Horner missed out on this year's tour with a knee injury, don't think the 41-year-old RadioShack Leopard Trek rider is done racing. 7 pm. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St. $10.
saturday 3
Mead, Music & Motorcycles
FUN—The Horned Hand is back! Not really. But its owners are, and they're celebrating the opening of their new mead hall. It'll be an all-day outdoor throwdown in the meadery parking lot, next to the moto shop. Expect rowdy music from Carrie Nation, Hopeless Jack and The Handsome Devil and others. Noon-11pm. Nectar of the Gods Meadery, 1205 NE 2nd St. Free.
sunday 3
Cascade Gran Fondo
BIKE RIDE—Ride with Tour veteran Chris Horner! He's fast! He's also a super nice guy. Choose from 22-, 53- and 75-mile options that take riders along Cascade Highway (start and finish at Mt. Bachelor). Though not a race, there are prizes for the top three men and women. Register at cascadegranfondo.com or onsite the morning of. 9 am. Mt. Bachelor. $25-$100.
sunday 4
Cedric Watson
ZYDECO—Cedric Watson is the crowning jewel of this summer's Free Summer Sunday Concerts. A gumbo of rich-voiced ska, New Orleans Mardi Gras accordions, and rip-tearing Charlie Daniels violins, the two-time Grammy nominee (for gawd sake, give him one already!) rounds out a super series. 2:30 pm. Les Schwab Amphitheater, 344 SW Shevlin Hixon Dr. Free.
sunday 4
Black Pussy
ROCK—Remember the last time the Source picked Black Pussy and really offended some of our readers? Well, sorry, squares, we're picking them again! Not because their name is borderline offensive (careful when Google-ing) but because their throwback '70s hard rock and extra-short cutoff jean shorts will melt your face off. 8 pm. Silver Moon Brewing, 24 NW Greenwood Ave. $5.
tuesday 6
Long Tall Eddy
COUNTRY—Before the likes of Toby Keith glamorized country music with shows as spectacular as a Broadway production, country twang was as beautifully stark as West Texas (or, in this case, Central Oregon). With crashing high-hats, unflinching bass lines, slide guitars, and singers that oww-oww-oww croon, croon, croon, Long Tall Eddy is elemental. 7 pm. GoodLife Brewing, 70 SW Century Dr. Free.
tuesday 6
In the High Country
FILM—Ultra-runner Anton Krupicka is on another level and this beautifully shot film proves it. Follow the lanky, well-tanned and heavily bearded badass (two-time winner of the Leadville 100) through a summer of exploring Colorado's high country. Beers and snacks with director/producer Joel Wolpert follow the film. 7:30 pm. Rebound Physical Therapy, 1160 SW Simpson Ave. $5 and can of food.
wednesday 7
Dirty Dancing
SWAYZE SUMMER—The first-ever retrospective of the great American actor Patrick Swayze continues with his sizzling 1987 hit "Dirty Dancing." Based loosely on a former West Side Story dancer, the movie is hot. As recently as five years ago, one survey had "Dirty Dancing" as the No. 1 "movie women watch," over "Pretty Woman" and "The Sound of Music." See you there, laayddddieeess! 8 pm, Old Stone Church, 157 NW Franklin Ave. Free.
