Our Picks 8/14- 8/22

wednesday 14

What's Brewing?

PRESENTATION—What's up in Salem? Get the conservative perspective from Sen. Tim Knopp and Rep. Jason Conger. To recap: Knopp enjoyed some measure of success this legislative session (see: "Jenna's Law"); Conger, however, earned two F's and a B from us in our recent legislative report card. Grab a pint and some patience and listen in. 5-7 pm. Volcanic Theater Pub, 70 SW Century Dr. Free.

Bend Brewfest

BEER—We know, we know...we picked Brewfest last week. But we thought that with 63 vendors and beers like the Seizoen Bretta (Logsdon Farmhouse Ales) and the Belgian Baroness IRA (Deschutes Brewery), the three-day event deserved another mention. 3-11 pm Thursday and Friday; noon-11 pm Saturday. Les Schwab Amphitheater, 344 SW Shevlin Hixon Dr. Free entry; $12 for mug; $1, sold in packs of five tasting tokens.

friday 16

MUNCH & MOVIES—Another smashing CGI-animated Pixar film. This one features a fiery red-headed Scottish princess (finally, a strong female lead!) as well as the usual cast of laughable stooges, furry sidekicks and charming elders. Pack up the family, head to NorthWest Crossing and enjoy a summer movie outside. 6 pm setup (movie begins at dusk). Compass Park, NorthWest Crossing. Free.

friday 16 - sunday 18

High and Dry Bluegrass Festival

MUSIC—Three days of music for $15 AND you get to bring your own cooler of beer. Amazing. Bands include Pitchfork Revolution, Great Northern Planes, Eight Dollar Mountain and more. Want to camp out? It's only $10 extra. See y'all there. Starts Friday 1:30 pm. Gibson Air Road (near Bend Airport). $15.

saturday 17

Oso Negro

MUSIC—An unexpected hip-hop powerhouse from Ontario (Oregon), Oso Negro won't stop releasing albums and EPs—he's put out four in the past two years. This week he'll bring his relentless beats to Bend's new summertime spot: Dojo's open-air patio. 10 pm. Dojo, 852 NW Brooks St. Free.

saturday 17

Stairway Denied

ROCK—Formula for an awesome day: Start with the delicious offerings at Bend BrewFest, then hit up a rocking after party with a Led Zeppelin tribute band that takes its name from a Wayne's World reference. 9 pm. Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Dr. $7 in advance; $10 at the door.

monday 19

ALBUM RELEASE—We're in love with local alt-country rockers Wilderness but have never been able to listen to the band from the comfort of our home stereo speakers. Luckily, a party on Monday marks the release of Wilderness' first CD, Homeward From the Battle. We plan to take it home and listen to it while drinking beer in our underwear. Terrible Buttons open. 7 pm. Crux Fermentation Project, 50 SW Division St.

tuesday 20

Coco Montoya

GREAT GUITAR—Somewhere between the peaceful easy feeling of the Eagles and the thrashier, rockier songs of Santana is Southern California guitarist Coco Montoya. Playing in blues bands and clubs since the '70s, Montoya is maturing with age like a strong red wine. 8 pm, The Sound Garden, 1289 NE Second St., $20-$25.

wednesday 21

Red Dawn

SWAYZE SUMMER—It is so wonderful that Vladimir Putin has once again returned Rooskies to their place as invincible vodka-guzzling maniacs—just like during the '80s, when nearly every movie cast them as steely-eyed archenemies. None did it better than Red Dawn (OK, Rocky IV was pretty great), the action-packed flick in which high schoolers heed the patriotic call to kick some RED BUTT! 8 pm. Old Stone Church, 157 NW Franklin Ave. Free.

wednesday 21

Ed Forman

NAUGHTY FAKE TV—The Sin City and hipster twin to Conan O'Brien, Ed Forman says what's on his booze-addled mind in his faux TV talk show. A staple event at Portland's naughty nightclub Dante's and featured on Comedy Central, the Ed Forman Show is a rambunctious smash-up of music, irreverent interviews and rocking bands. 7 pm. Old St. Francis School, 700 NW Bond, Free.
