Our Picks for the week of 11/4 - 11/12, 2009.

The Nature of Words

wednesday-sunday 4-8

It's time again for Central Oregon's biggest literary celebration and this year the festival has brought in some high-powered wordsmiths for readings, book signings, workshops and more. The lineup includes Sherman Alexie, Matthew Dickman, Charles Goodrich, Seth Katner, Karen Karbo, Jane Kirkpatrick, Valzhyna Mort and Kim Stafford. For a complete schedule of events, visit www.thenatureofwords.org.

Sherman Alexie Unplugged

friday 6

This year's Nature of Words features an appearance by this National Book Award Winner (for Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian) in an open forum where he'll read, answer questions and probably just run that hilarious mouth of his. Alexie's presentations are entertaining and sometimes delightfully profane - but in a good way. Ask him about the Seattle Supersonics if you really want to get him going. $45. 9am-11am Friday, Nov 6. Pinckney Center at COCC, 2600 NW College Way.

Swollen Members

friday 6

The Canadian hip-hop moguls return to town after gracing us with their presence when opening for the Kottonmouth Kings a few months back. The boys are also making an appearance at Ranch Records at 4pm for an in-store meet-and-greet. Also on the bill for the show are Big B, Common Market, The Dirtball & Bliss N Esso. $18/adv, $20/door. All ages. 8pm. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

First Friday

friday 6

The weather report is looking, well, pretty good, considering it's November. OK, it's not supposed to be terribly nice out, but get over it... there's plenty of great art to see. Downtown Bend.

Jim Witty Book Release Party

saturday 7

Last year, The Bulletin's outdoors writer Jim Witty passed away unexpectedly, leaving behind a memorable body of work from his years at our daily paper. A collection of his articles entitled, Meet Me In The Badlands: Exploring Central Oregon with Jim Witty, is now ready for release, which is the reason for this celebration. 12:30pm-2:30pm Silver Moon Brewing Co, 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

Fun'raiser for Robin Kendall

sunday 8

This June, Robin Kendall was in an awful car accident that left her with a brain injury, among other traumas. She has been out of work and struggling to recover, which is the reason for this fundraising party on her behalf. 3pm-7pm Sunday, Nov 8. Silver Moon Brewing Co, 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

Dropkick Murphys

sunday 8

The larger-than-life Celtic punk rock band descends on the Midtown to give you a perfectly good excuse to party on a Sunday night. Read more about the band in the On Stage column. Also on the bill are The Flatliners, The Insurgence and Larry & His Flask. $22/adv, $25/door. All ages. 8pm. Midtown Ballroom, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

Where Hope Resides

monday 9

A documentary film about the legendary Skeena River, one of the longest un-dammed rivers in British Columbia and a refuge for wild sockeye salmon and steelhead. The film examines the fate of the river as told through the journey of returning sockeye salmon who run a gauntlet of man-made obstacles including commercial and sport fishermesn, as well as the larger threats of habitat degradation. 6:30 McMenamins Old St. Francis School, 700 NW Bond St.

Joseph Israel

wednesday 11

Perhaps you haven't seen that many red-haired reggae stars, so Joseph Israel may be your first. The California-based guitarist and vocalist rolls with a significantly sized band which he'll have in tow for this free, all-ages show at McMenamins. This is a nice addition to what has been a largely reggae-less live music as of late. Free. All Ages. 7pm. McMenamins Old St. Francis School, 700 NW Bond St.

Art Envy: The Art of Graffiti

wednesday 11

Some say that graffiti is more nuisance than art, but when done properly (and not on your grandma's garage) is very much a proper art form. At this event, local artist Paula Bullwinkel, discusses the history of graffiti art and also leads a hands-on stencil workshop. Call 312-1034 to register for free. 6pm. Bend Public Library- Brooks Room, 601 NW Wall St.

Cascade Lakes Picture Party

wednesday 11

The purpose of this party, ostensibly, is to get your picture taken for your season pass. But there will be plenty of season pass-less folks there swilling the discounted Cascade Lakes brews as they wait to see if their name is called to win a free season pass - as well as other free goodies. Fingers are officially crossed. Cascade Lakes Lodge, 1441 SW Chandler Ave.
