Our Picks for 1/19-1/26

Anthony B

thursday 19

Yeah, we highlighted the Jamaican superstar last week, but we're doing it again - he's that awesome, and how often do we get authentic reggae in Central Oregon? Over the last 14 years, the prolific artist has cranked out 13 albums and more than 1,000 singles, all while advocating justice for the poor and oppressed. And the dude smokes massive amounts of marijuana, if that's your thing. Roots reggae rockers Zamunda and Delly Ranx open the show. $21 at bendticket.com. 9pm. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

Downhill Ryder

friday 20

All you snowriders out there, this one's for you. What more could you ask for than a Bend-based band inspired by microbreweries and crisp mountain air, on a Friday, with no cover, at Parilla Grill. Especially when "flirting with blues, funk, folk" are involved, as their website attests. Yes, please. 7pm. Parilla Grill, 635 NW 14th St.

Imagining War

saturday 21

When John March, the devoted father in Louisa May Alcott's Little Women, headed off for the Civil War, readers never heard of the horror of the killing, of the chores of cleaning up after battle. But as part of the Deschutes County Library's ongoing series Let's Talk About It: Making Sense of the American Civil War, participants follow March on his dark and soul searching journey through Geraldine Brooks' 2005 novel March and discover the depth of his pain and so many others like him for themselves. 3pm. Bend Public Library, Brooks Room, 601 NW Wall St.

Red Raven Follies

saturday 21

Build a little daydream for yourself with these elements: Girls with roller derby names like Golden Delicious and Dandy Pie, cabaret, poetry and vaudeville. Set this vision to a soundtrack including "Mac the Knife" and "Dream a Little Dream." Then visit Astro Lounge to see this little reverie come to life in the form of this reincarnation of the classic variety show. 9pm. Astro Lounge, 939 NW Bond St.

Peter Yarrow

saturday 21

Yes, this is that Peter. The one whose songwriting and singing with Peter, Paul and Mary floats in the background to memories of your younger and hippier self. See our interview with the legendary folk star in the Sound section. $40 at towertheatre.org. 7:30pm. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St.

Danny Barnes

wednesday 25

One of the most talented and innovative Americana songwriters in the freaking world is coming to Bend for a totally free (in terms of both cover charge and age restrictions) and totally awesome show. Check out the On Stage column in the Sound section to learn why that name "Danny Barnes" is ringing so many bells in that head of yours right now. 7pm. Free. McMenamins Old St. Francis School, 700 NW Bond St.

Why Occupy?

sunday 22

While images of Occupy Wallstreeters camping in city parks and generally denouncing the one percenters are burned into our brains, a clear picture of their demands and goals have proved much more elusive. But no longer! Panelists from Occupy Bend will explain their motives, let audience members ask questions and then facilitate small group discussions. 6:30pm. First Presbyterian Church, 230 NE 9th St.

Jeffery Broussard & The Creole Cowboys

monday 23

Just your standard Creole-accordion, Zydeco-innovating, cowboy-fiddling good time in Sisters. These boys bring Louisiana culture to the mountain town in this show that the Sisters Folk Festival 2012 Winter Concert Series is billing as "Hot Zydeco Music on a Cold Winter Night." $15 Adults, $10 students at sistersfolkfestival.org. Doors at 6:30 pm., show at 7pm. Sisters High School, 1700 West Mckinney Butte Rd. Anthony B

Wolf Recovery in Oregon

tuesday 24

It's a fascinating drama. Like native sons returning home after decades of absence, wolves are back and appear ready to settle down. But shadowy lives monitored by government tracking collars lend a fugitive-on-the-run air to their lives, and many Oregon ranchers and farmers are ready to label them criminals. Learn more about the backstory from John Stephenson, the USFWS biologist in charge of wolf recovery in Oregon, and whether this story will be one of tragedy or triumphant return. RSVP at deschuteslandtrust.org. 7pm. GoodLife Brewing, 70 SW Century Dr.
