Our Picks for 12/23 - 12/31: Adam Schell Reading, Holiday String Band, New Year's Eve Music and more

What's going on in Central Oregon the week of 12/23 - 12/31.

Adam Schell Author Reading

wednesday 23

We got a book called Tomato Rhapsody: A Fable of Love, Lust, and Forbidden Fruit in the mail a few months ago and that wasn't unique in and of itself because we get a lot of books in the mail. But what did catch our often-wandering attention was the attached bio for author Adam Schell. He'd played some linebacker at Northwestern, taught yoga in Hollywood and now spent time writing a book set in the Tuscan countryside. Now he's moved to Bend and has dropped by the Source offices. We've learned that he's a terribly nice guy with plenty of stories to tell, so go hear a story when he reads from Tomato Rhapsody and signs the book. 7:30pm Wednesday, Dec 23. Jackson's Corner, 845 NW Delaware Ave.

A Gentle Christmas Eve

thursday 24

Somehow, it's Christmas this week. And to think, we were just putting away our Labor Day decorations just a few weeks ago. Time flies. But before you dive into the gifts, eggnog and familial drama on Friday, check out this super low-key Christmas Eve event at the Rosie Bareis Campus. Well-known local Hawaiian music guru Bill Keale is the special guest and will provide some gentle sounds. There's also Christmas music and some poetry. Don't you already feel relaxed just reading about this? 8pm-9pm. Rosie Bareis Campus, 1010 NW 14th St.

Holiday String Band

saturday 26

The live music world has, for the most part, gone to sleep (with the exception of New Year's Eve, of course) until mid-January, but this day-after-Christmas bluegrassy jam party is a not-to-be-missed show for the Americana fans. The band is comprised of Biscuit Burner members Billy Cardine (the dobro master) and Mary Lucey who gladly join players from the newly formed Pitchfork Revolution. This very well may be a one-time deal, so shake off your Christmas hangover and get out there! $8. 9pm. Silver Moon Brewing Co., 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

Bend Roots Acoustic Showcase

saturday 26

It's cold outside. Not as cold as it was a couple weeks back, but it's winter, people. That's why you won't be outside at this Bend Roots event, even though you, like us, are already longing for the 2010 installment of the festival. But Mark Ransom and other familiar players from the Roots scene will be on hand for some post-Christmas acoustic tunes. 7pm. Parrilla Grill, 635 NW 14th St.

New Year's Eve Music

thursday 31

We've got a whole champagne bucket full of things for you to do New Year's Eve. Just turn the page to see what masquerade ball, rodeo, blue moon party or other soiree you should attend to send 2009 - arguably the worst year of all time - out in style. Again, just turn the page.

New Year's Buck & Ball

thursday 31

Remember that rodeo we were talking about in the previous blurb? Well, this is that rodeo. Once again the Buck & Ball is returning to the Expo Center for a mutli-faceted night. What other event allows you to see men trying to stay atop wildly bucking animals then follow it up with dancing and fireworks? Music is provided by local country act Countryfied, who will be joined by former Making the Band star and member of Danity Kane, Shannon Bex. All ages. Kids under 10 free. $15/adv, $20/door. 7:30pm-2am. Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center.

Murder on the Menu - New Year's Eve 2009

thursday 31

OMG, somebody is probably going to be killed at this New Year's Eve party. Seriously? No, not seriously, this interactive murder mystery dinner features Chef Geoff, the producer of a TV show called Celebrity Chef. You'll taste the food and meet fellow competitors for a spot as host of the show... before things really heat up. Includes live music and NYE party after. $60/adv, $65/door. 6:15pm Rumors Restaurant, 250 NW 6th St.. Redmond.
