Our Picks for 1/27 - 2/4: John Cruz, Ruins of Ooah, The Quick & Easy Boys and more

What to do in Central Oregon the week of 1/27 - 2/4/2010.

John Cruz

wednesday 27

This Grammy-winning Hawaiian guitarist and songwriter descends on the Silver Moon for a rare Oregon appearance. Cruz is a legend on the islands, but also has a strong following on the mainland that includes folks like Eddie Vedder and Trey Anastasio, the latter of whom he collaborated with to create Trey's solo cut "A Case of Ice and Snow." $10/adv at bendticket.com, $12/door. 8pm. Silver Moon Brewing Co., 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

Grouch & Eligh, Lucky I Am,
Sunspot Jonz, Marv Ellis,
Minscape, UNON

thursday 28

This massively huge hip-hop celebration brings five members of the storied California indie rap collective Living Legends and will likely bring out many a healthy chunk of Bend's relatively sizeable hip-hop contingent. And yes, the members of the Legends will be performing together. Also on the bill is Oregon rapper Marv Ellis (known for his multiple performances at the Bendistillery Martini Bar), who will be playing with a full band. You can find some local talent at the show as well with UNON, the collaborative effort between Cloaked Characters and Mosley Wotta. All ages. 8pm. Midtown Ballroom, 51 NW Greenwood Ave. $22/advance, $25/day of show.

The Quick & Easy Boys

thursday-friday 27-28

We've got a juicy profile of this Portland honky tonk goes funkadelic band in the Sound section which will probably convince you to head out and see one of the two Central Oregon shows the Boys have scheduled this week. Thursday: Three Creeks Brewing Co., 721 Desperado Ct. $5. 8pm. Friday: Silver Moon Brewing Co., 24 NW Greenwood Ave. $5. 9pm.

The Sofa Kings

friday 29

It's taken a little more than a year, but this local band, fronted by the enormous vocal capabilities of Stephanie Slade, has gotten the attention of folks on the local music scene. If you haven't seen this band yet, check out this free show and get your ears on Slade's pipes - she can wail. Free. 9pm. Players Bar & Grill, 25 SW Century Dr.

Wizard of Oz Film Sing-a-Long

saturday 30

We represent the Lollipop Guild, Lollipop Guild, the Lollipop Guild - just kidding, it's just us at the Source. Our lack of official Lollipop Guild uniforms probably gave that one away. But we're just practicing for this sing-along event at the Tower during which you can sing along to all your favorite Oz songs. No, you're not permitted to blast Dark Side of the Moon from your ghetto blaster, in case you were wondering. $10/adults, $7.50/children (12 and under). 7pm Saturday, Jan 30. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St.

Renegade Rollergirls Party with Yenn

saturday 30

There ain't no party like a Renegade Rollergirls party 'cause a Renegade Roller Girls Party don't stop. OK, the party does stop, but it's still cool. Music provided by emerging local psychedelic rock band Yenn. 9pm. Players Bar & Grill, 25 SW Century Dr.

Ruins of Ooah

wednesday 3

It's been more than three long months since we've had a taste of this almost-local band that features the didgeridoo playing of Bend's own Tyler Spencer. The rest of the lineup are former members of the venerable Eugene jam band Reeble Jar and will impress the hell out of you - that is, if you're impressed by earth-rattling sounds. And it's a free show, too. 7pm. McMenamins Old St. Francis School, 700 NW Bond St.

Three Cups of Tea Fundraiser

wednesday 5

Word is that Greg Mortenson's February 11 reading and presentation at Bend High is sold out, so if you didn't get a ticket, you can still get in on the action by attending this event to raise funds for Mortenson's efforts in Pakistan and Afghanistan. This tea social and silent auction features hand-made teacups donated from Central Oregon Potters and the COCC pottery department. 2pm-5pm, Wednesday, Feb 3. Athletic Club of Bend: Fireside Room. 61615 Athletic Club Dr. $5 minimum donation.

Warren Miller's Dynasty

thursday 4 - friday 5

If you missed this ski film the first time around, you're in luck because the latest installment in the storied franchise is coming back to the Tower with an auction and raffle on both nights. Benefits the Rimrock Expeditionary Alternative Learning Middle School. Thursday is family night, Friday is 21and up. 5:30pm Thursday, Feb 4 and Friday, Feb 5. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St.
