Our Picks for 1/6 - 1/14: Luck One, Slick Side Down, Liferuiner, Mystic Roots Band and more

What to do in Central Oregon the week of 1/6 - 1/14.

Diezel P, Bad Habit, Luck-One

friday 8

We had the chance to chat with Portland hip-hop artist Luck-One for this week's Sound feature. Flip to that section and you'll be convinced (probably) to hit up this hip-hop showcase at the Martini Bar. It's like rap in your living room... if your living room is replete with good drinks, that is. 10pm. Bendistillery Martini Bar, 850 Brooks St.

Back to School Jam

friday 8

If you're a student, you just had two weeks stretched out on the couch, sofa or davenport and now you've just soldiered through your first week back in class and feel like you need another vacation. That's not gonna happen, so how about a raging dance party? Eh? This all-ages jammy jamer includes music from a host of DJs including MC Graft, Mark Rada, DJ Harlo, Chase Enoch, Danger:Russ, and DJ Lnx. Bar with ID. 7pm-2:30am. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

Slick Side Down

saturday 9

After being called out by one of our own bloggers for favoring events that appeal to young whippersnappers in our coverage, we'd like to start 2010 off right with a nod to this jazz show. The local combo Slick Side Down takes the jazz format and funks it up from time to time. Satisfied, Woody? No cover. 8:30pm. 28, 920 NW Bond St.

Liferuiner, Footclan, Never Heard the Shot, Landshark

saturday 9

Hard, hard, hardcore music invades the Domino Room as upstate New York's growling Liferuiner comes to town along with a host of other metal and punkish acts. The Band Name of the Week award goes to opener Foot Clan for conjuring images of the mole-faced evil ninjas (as opposed to the benevolent, kind-hearted ninjas that make the world go round) from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise. $8. 7pm. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

Push

throughout January

The long, oftentimes slow path to bringing a DIY skatepark to Bend continues in the Division Street Skatepark Project, which benefits from the sale of skateboard decks that have been arted up by local visionaries. The decks will be up on the Thump walls through the end of the month along with Lloyd McMullen's 2D/3D mixed media. Thump Coffee, 25 NW Minnesota Ave, Ste 2.

Finn Riggins

wednesday 13

We've had some fun writing about this Boise trio over the past year during which they've played a pair of shows at the Silver Moon. But now, the band is playing its biggest stage with a free performance at McMenamins. Finn Riggins prides itself on often-complex arrangements that are both poppy and experimental. Check out the band's latest full-length record, Vs. Wilderness to get a taste of what these dudes and dudette have going. Free, all ages. 7pm. McMenamins Old St. Francis School, 700 NW Bond St.

Mystic Roots Band

thursday 14

Hailing from Chico, California, home to the headquarters of Major League Partying, the Mystic Roots Band has come through Bend before, once as the backing band for Jamaican reggae legend Pato Banton. They have a steady following on the West Coast and have worked their way up the reggae food chain over the years. And check this out: their album, Constant Struggle, features songs like "Pass the Marijuana" and "Smoke Out." Giggle, giggle. Monk K-Boy and MC Mystic support. $8. 9:30pm. The Summit Saloon & Stage, 125 NW Oregon Ave.

Darwin's Puzzles:
the Evolution of Sex and Death

thursday-friday 14 and 15

It's 2010, so let's talk about evolution, shall we? This is the first pair of lectures in a seven-subject series that explores the scientific and philosophical world Darwin helped to create. Patrick Phillips, the director of the Center for Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Oregon, presents this seemingly sexy presentation. Thursday: 6:30pm, Wille Hall, COCC. Friday: 6:30pm Sunriver Nature Center. Studenttickets $3; Nature Center members $8; general public $10; entire series $50. 6:30pm Thursday, Jan 14. COCC's Campus Center, 2600 NW College Way.
