Songcrafters: Songs & their Stories
MUSIC—Ever listen to a song and wonder, "Whaaaa...did they mean by that line?" Here's a chance to hear the story behind the song. The fourth in this monthly series, local musicians perform their original music and share the inspiration for the melody and the message. Oregon WinterFest: Opening Day
FUN & FROLIC—Kick off a weekend of food, fun, entertainment and celebration of all things winter. The New Orleans jazzy tunes of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band will fill the air, as will skiers and snowboarders in the Rail Jam. 5 pm-11pm. Yee Paw! Country and Western Valentine's Day Dance
DINNER & DANCING—Two-step into romance with a five-star catered dinner from Baltazar's followed by dance lessons. A thigh-slapping (infer how you want), partner-swinging (ditto) Valentine's Day. Valentine's Day Ball and Fashion Show
SEXY—With the lack of clothing some of the models are expected to wear in this "lustful fashion show," we assume most of the runway will happen within Dojo's swank and toasty interior. With designs from the sassy, but stylish Rescue Consignment and smart but sexy N Spekktor and Sarah Viles, the fashion show is sandwiched between cello music from Third Seven and heavy industrial beats of DJ Harlo. 8:30 pm. MUSIC—With a battering hurricane of bass and snare, a flood of out of town DJs roll in to Bend for a night of EDM and healthy food and drinks by Locavore. DJ Anjali and The Incredible Kid of Portland spin world-inspired house music along with the beats of Ilko Major and international DJ Moksha and locals DJ Byrne and bPollen. 9:30 pm. Oregon WinterFest: Saturday
WINTER—Fire pits, ice sculptures, food, drink, snow and some of the biggest nationally touring musical acts that Bend will see until the kickoff Memorial Day Weekend concerts, WinterFest rides again Saturday—all day—with a performance from Portland's twisted indie-rock band Menomena (dot, do, dot, do, do). 9:30 pm. Central Oregon Symphony Winter Concert
MUSIC—Lindsay Deutsch—described as "one of the most interesting, imaginative and downright thrilling young violinists in America today"— joins this orchestra of local volunteer musicians for an evening of Tchaikovsky and Rossini, Mussorgsky and Borodin. 2 pm. JUGGLING—Yes, juggling. No, not what that hippie dude does at Drake Park. These are the Mario Andrettis of juggling. The Gizmo Guys defy physics, logic, and occasionally sensible dress codes to present an eye-popping, gasp-inducing stage show that has been wow-enough to appear both on Comedy Central and Nickelodeon. 7 pm. The Grand Anderson/ Fantastic Mr. Fox
FILM—The second installment in the Source's Grand Anderson Film Series, this adaptation of the classic Roald Dahl story was Wes Anderson's foray into the animated realm. George Clooney and Meryl Streep lend their voices to the fox couple who, assisted by a menagerie of their other forest friends, outwit the local farmers. 7 pm.
