Our Picks for 3/2 - 3/10: The Staxx Brothers, Queens of the Mic CD Release, First Friday, Water & Bodies and more

What's going on in Bend, Oregon this week?

The Staxx Brothers

wednesday 2

Seattle's funky, funky rockers, The Staxx Brothers are returning to Bend, and this time the show is totally free. The Staxx Bros mix funk and hip-hop with a thriving funk sound to keep the party rocking and chances are we'll hear a few songs off the band's forthcoming album, Jungle Cat. And did we mention there are about 47 people in this band? OK, more like seven, but it looks like 47 when they're all up on stage funking out all at once. 7pm. McMenamins Old St. Francis School, 700 NW Bond St.

The Supervillains, Necktie Killer

wednesday 2

That whole "ska city" thing of 2010 didn't quite work out for Bend, but we've got at least one return act from that insurgence in this nationally touring punk and ska outfit. Hailing from Florida, the Supervillains bring out all the best in ska music for your skanking pleasure. Local skasters Necktie Killer open the show. $10. 8pm. The Summit Saloon & Stage,

Queens of the Mic CD Release

thursday 2

It seems that females are far too under represented here in our local hip-hop scene. That will change on Thursday when this all-lady rap show hits the Madhappy Lounge. Appearing on the mic are Emcee Belief, Nejma Shea, Maven, Stayfreee and more. Hosted by Gainon the Illyrikill and beats by DJ A-Bomb. 2:30am. Madhappy Lounge, 850 NW Brooks St.

First Friday

friday 4

The snow is melting and the art is ready to be viewed at this month's First Friday. One thing to check out is the snowsports-themed Pow Wow show at the Poethouse where Lori LaBissoniere will be showing her work, along with that of some other artists. Downtown Bend, Old Mill District. Beginning at 5pm.

To the Moon

friday 4

Electronic music continues to play a bigger role in the regional music scene and this event serves to only build on that move. The DJ-centric show features appearances by a long list of excellent party pushers, including R/D, Nasty Nasty, Graintable, Tooth and N4il, Defekt and Harlo, Encounter, Ish-U, Arok and Hliff, The A.R.T.S. $10. 18+, Bar for 21+. slipmatscience.com. 10pm. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

Night Under the Covers: Nirvana

friday 4

If you grew up in the 1990s, you probably know just about every Nirvana song by heart. But even if you don't, make sure you take a break from the Art Walk to stop into Tart and hear your favorite local performers take on the works of Kurt Cobain. And remember performers, not everyone gets to play "Smells Like Teen Spirit." 5pm-9pm. Tart,

Water & Bodies, Tango Alpha Tango, Ex-Cowboys

saturday 5

Water & Bodies is a Portland indie rock band with some Bend ties that recently released a new album, Light Year, and are nice enough to return our way for this release show. Their sound is fresh, challenging, and most importantly, pleasantly big. Also on the bill are Tango Alpha Tango, a Portland throwback folky act and the experimental mashup rockers of Ex-Cowboys. $7. 9pm. Silver Moon Brewing Co., 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

Portland Opera to Go:
Elixir of Love

sunday 6

We've been historically starved for opportunities to see opera here in Central Oregon, and the Portland Opera is aware of that, which is why they're bringing the show to us. For free. See the Culture section for more on this taste of high culture. Free. 2pm. McMenamins Old St. Francis School #MVENUE

Viva Voce, Damien Jurado,
Loch Lomond

monday 7

Hit up the Sound section for more on Viva Voce, a duo with the sound of a freight train. But you should also show up in time to see the excellent chamber folk of Loch Lomond and Damien Jurado, a solid-as-they-come singer-songwriter. Part of the PDXchange program. $20. 7:30pm. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St.

Breathe EZ Benefit Concert
and Silent Auction

thursday 10

We were stunned last week when we got word that Erin Zurflu, best known as one half of the local acoustic act The Erins, has been diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in one of her lungs. She is facing a surgery soon and to assist her with the costs and give her a boost, a ton of local musicians are joining together for this show. The lineup includes Chris Beland, Erin Cole-Baker band, Sara Jackson-Holman, Elliot and, of course, The Erins. $10 or more donation. 6pm. Century Center, 70 SW Century Dr.
