See the On Stage column for more. 6:30pm. Les Schwab Amphitheater, 344 SW Shevlin Hixon Dr. All ages. $37 plus fees.

Dar Williams

thursday 5

This poppy folk artist has been touring the country for almost 20 years now, all the while creating excellently crafted songs with a distinct sound that has since been the calling card of the New York-based artist. She's also known for her social and environmental activism, some of which can be heard in her passionate songs. Reserved seating: $29 & $37/adv, $32 & $40/day of show. 8pm-10pm, Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St.

Jade's Jazz Festival

friday-sunday 6-8

This weekend, La Pine becomes the region's jazz capital with the Jade's Jazz Festival, a three-day explosion of snazzy sounds from a collection of regional, national and local jazz artists. The lineup includes David Patrone and the Midnight Auer Quartet, Detour: Jazz, Lino, Bellavia, Robin and Jason Jackson, Louis Landon (a piano artist who toured among the big names of the late 1970s), Jazz Bros, Bobby Gibson, Slick Side Down, Mark Lair II. If you're a jazz fan, this is probably the event you've been waiting for, so don't pass it up - make the drive down to La Pine for some finger snappin'. La Pine Event Center, Morrison and First St., La Pine. Three-day, two-day and single-day tickets available at jadesjazz.net.

The Parson Red Heads

friday 6

Returning to Bend for the first time in more than two years are the Parson Red Heads, a collective of often-white-clothed indie folk rockers who look and sound like a psychedelic version of the Partridge Family. Previously based in the hipper-than-hip Silverlake neighborhood of Los Angeles, the Red Heads have since relocated to Portland, which means maybe we'll get more free shows from them like this in the future. Free, all ages. 7pm. McMenamins Old St. Francis School, 700 NW Bond St.

Art

opens friday 6

Is art more important than relationships? This Tony-award-winning play asks this question when three men find their longtime friendship inexplicably disrupted when one of them buys a pricy piece of modern art. We wouldn't recommend this for the tots because of strong language, but for anyone who's fantasized about hanging that haunting Rothko above their mantle (or, in our case, an Ikea table) and might even trade a bosom buddy for it, this play is a must-see. Gala Opening Aug 6, 6pm. Aug 7, 12, 13 &14, 7:30pm. Aug. 8 & 15, 2pm. Greenwood Playhouse, 148 NW Greenwood Ave.

First Friday

friday 6

With warm temperatures expected and more fine art than you could wave a paintbrush at hanging in Bend's galleries, this is fixin' to be a fine First Friday. There are exciting shows to see all over town, including in the Old Mill and up at Northwest Crossing, and, of course, downtown where you can see pieces from the Central Oregon Metal Arts Guild at Arts Central, a mixed-media display at Poethouse Art and plenty more. Begins at 5pm.

Race for the River

saturday 7

If you think the river has been crowded this summer, then this weekend will really make your head spin. On Saturday, paddle boards, rafts, kayaks, floaties and canoes will be racing the Deschutes, all in the name of raising money for the Deschutes River Conservancy. Dogs are welcome and even receive a complimentary life jacket from Ruff Wear. $15/person, $20/with dog, $50/corporate team. 10am-4pm Saturday, Aug 7. Riverbend Park, 799 SW Columbia St.

William Fitzsimmons, Rosi Golan

sunday 8

The other day, we walked out of our office to see a new concert poster had been tacked to our bulletin board, prompting us to say, "Oh dear, that's a mightily bearded man on that there poster." The man is named William Fitzsimmons and he makes impressively melodic, Iron-and-Wine-esque acoustic tunes that showcase his delicate voice. A therapist before he hit it big on the indie-folk circuit, Fitzsimmons recently released a new disc entitled Derivatives, and it's an album that's worth a listen. $12/adv at bendticket.com, $15/door. 8pm. Silver Moon Brewing Co., 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

Dangermuffin

sunday 8

See this week's Sound story for more on this electrified Americana band that's playing not only this free Sunday show, but also a string of gigs at McMenamins all next week. All ages. 2:30pm-4:30pm. Les Schwab Amphitheater, 344 SW Shevlin Hixon Dr.

Bonnie & Clyde

opens thursday 12

This sexy bank-robbing couple from the early 1900s has inspired many performances, including the Academy Award-winning movie that had Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty robbing banks and being generally sexy. The sexiness comes to Bend for an on-stage run. $20, $17/students, seniors, groups. August 12 29. Weds-Sat, 8pm; Sun, 6pm. Bend Performing Arts Center, 1155 SW Division St.
