The irreverent Reverend Horton Heat is making a return appearance to heat up the Domino Room with some of the craziest psychobilly jams you're likely to hear this side of Texas. Opening the show is a band whose name we just heard bleeped out on a radio ad - Nashville Pussy. $20/advance, $25/door. Doors open at 8pm. Bendticket.com. 9pm. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.
Sisters Folk Festival
friday-sunday 9-11
Every year, it seems this stalwart of Sisters' cultural fabric attracts a more diverse and impressive lineup of nationally known folk, roots and Americana acts. We spent the last week listening to every act on the bill and have two pages about our favorite acts in the pages to come. Visit sistersfolkfestival.org for more info. Downtown Sisters.
Fuddy Meers
opens friday 9
We've learned something about local theater - if Derek Sitter is involved with a production, you can pretty much count on it being a little on the crazy side. Now, Sitter is directing Fuddy Meers, a zany comedy written by David Lindsay-Abaire, which he told us is the theatrical equivalent of Pulp Fiction. We're going to hold him to that. Head down to the Cascades Theatrical Company's Greenwood Playhouse to see if he's right. Opens on Friday night with performances Wednesday through Saturday at 7:30pm and Sundays at 2pm. $20/Adult, $15/Senior, $12/Student. Greenwood Playhouse, 148 NW Greenwood Ave.
Oktoberfest
saturday 10
Every year, we write something explaining why Oktoberfest is held in September, so we're going to spare you the repetition and just let you know that the first of these German celebrations is hitting Bend on Saturday. There's more beer than you can shake a stick at (bring your own shaking stick, please) as well as Germand food and music from the Eric Tollefson Band, Anastacia Beth Scott and Those Darn Accordions. It's free to get in, too. 11am. McMenamins Old St. Francis School, 700 NW Bond St.
22nd Annual Great Drake Park Duck Race
sunday 11
So here's the deal. You purchase a duck (or many, many ducks) for $5 and then your duck, along with the ducks of a few thousand other people, is dropped into the Deschutes River and the first one to the finish line wins. This popular charity event, put on by Rotary International, benefits a bevy of local nonprofit organizations. But there are also prizes to be won, including a $20,000 voucher to Roberson Ford. To purchase a duck, visit theduckrace.com. 11am Sunday, Sep 11. Drake Park, 777 NW Riverside Dr.
Finn Riggins and Tartufi
friday 9
There are several great things that have come out of Idaho... like, um, potatoes and, um, uh, other things, but add Finn Riggins to that list. The Boise band is an insanely talented trio that's been turning heads in the indie rock world and are nice enough to stop off in Bend, along with San Francisco power pop trio Tartufi, on their way to the big ol' Music Fest Northwest festival over in Portland. $5. 8:30pm.
Warrior King
Thursday 15
For those of you Bendites lamenting the departure of steady reggae from our local live music landscape, here's a show to give you a much needed fix of real-live reggae from an actual Jamaican artist!: $14/advance, $16/door. All ages. 8am-1am. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave. UPDATE: Show canceled.
Va Va Voom Burlesque Vixens with Harley Bourbon
thursday 15
You should come to this show for the burlesque excellence of this Northern California all-female act, but make sure you get there early to make sure you see local Americana rockers Harley Bourbon light up the peanut-shell-covered Horned Hand stage. $8 advance/$10 day of. 21 and over. 8:30pm. The Horned Hand, 507 NW Colorado Ave.
Touring the Galapagos Islands with Naturalist Jim Anderson
thursday 15
A few months ago, we got an email from our nature columnist, Jim Anderson, letting us know that he was going to be out of town for a bit. And not just out of town, but down in the Galapogos Islands, fulfilling a lifelong dream to investigate one of the world's most dynamic and interesting ecosystems. At this presentation, he'll let you in on his experiences and show off some pictures from his trip. 6:30pm Thursday, Sep 15. East Bend Public Library, 62080 Dean Swift Rd.
