Our Picks for the Week of 12/3-12/11

Leif James & The Struggle

wednesday 3

We profile the new reinvention of Leif James in the Sound section. Read that, then immediately head to the Moon to see him and the Struggle rip it up with an all-out acoustic rock show. 8pm. Silver Moon Brewing Co. 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

DJ Barisone

thursday 4

Yeah, we've spilled a lot of ink about DJ Barisone over the last year, but our prolificacy of writing on this man is worth it - he throws some of the best (if not the best) parties in town whenever he's behind the wheels. So, spend your Thursday with Barisone for some worldly jams and healthy amounts of funkalicious party music. 10pm. Bendistillery Martini Bar, 850 NW Brooks St.

Brad Tisdel

friday 5

Most probably know this name in connection with the Sisters Folk Festival (he's executive director) and the Americana Project (which he founded) but Tisdel is also one of the most skilled local folk artists in Central Oregon. Read his profile in the Sound section for more info, then call 350-9572 or e-mail [email protected] for tickets. 7pm. $7. Largent Studios House Concert.

friday-saturday 5-6 (and beyond)

Intention Media presents a new film exploring our addiction to oil and how green energy can help. Flip to the Sound section for a review of the film. Go to thefuelfilm.com for info. Pilot Butte 6, 2717 E Hwy 20. 382-6347.

Night of Roller Derby Madness

saturday 6

This time of year, there aren't too many weeks when the Picks department lets a roller derby bout slip by without some sort of mention. But typically it's either the Lava City Roller Dolls OR The Renegade Rollergirls who get the press-not this time. It's BOTH leagues playing on the same night for the ultimate night of roller derby and you can make it to both bouts! Lava city plays at the Central Oregon Indoor Sports Center (20795 High Desert Ln.) at 6pm and then the Renegade Rollergirls have their "The Naughty Versus the Nice" bout at Midtown (51 NW Greenwood Ave) kicking off at 8pm. Christmas came early for roller derby fans this year.

Empty Space Orchestra

saturday 6

At this Rise Up benefit show, you get another look at these youthful local prodigies that we raved about in the Sound Check column of this issue. Check it out and do everything in your power to get to this show. A) Rise Up is a great organization and B) Empty Space is pretty damn incredible. 8pm. PoetHouse Art, 55 NW Minnesota, above the Wine Shop.
