Hester Prynne

And you didn't think you'd ever need the knowledge you gleaned from reading The Scarlet Letter in 9th grade...This Kansas-based death metal band is stopping off in town along with And Hell Followed With, Whisteria Cottage, American Me, Knuckle Sandwich and Give Nothing. Check out the bargain price on this one...very nice. 7:30pm. $10. Midtown Music Hall. All Ages.

The Pink Snowflakes, The Strain

saturday 31

Loaded with fuzz and pumping out brightly colored sounds, The Pink Snowflakes are a Portland band that wears their psychedelic influences on its sleeves. Quirky, loud and metallic, you'll hear within the Snowflakes's sound some Flaming Lips as well maybe some MC5. 9pm. Players Bar & Grill, 25 SW Century Dr.

Kronkmen & Problem Stick

saturday 31

If there are two more zany (who says "zany" anymore? We do.) bands in Central Oregon, we haven't found them. When the boot stomping punk of the Kronkmen and the wrecked rock of Problem Stick collide, you best hold tight to your suspenders 'cause it's gonna be a wild one. 9:30pm. $3. Reed Pub Company, 1141 SE Centennial St.

David Bowers Colony

saturday 31

Flip the page and read more about this local music guru's new album and this show. Shireen Amini opens. 8:30pm. Silver Moon Brewing Co, 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

Super Bowl XLIII

sunday 1

In case you somehow forgot or maybe just don't give two damns about football, we thought we'd let you know that the Super Bowl is this weekend. Get your Velveeta and chili concoction and novelty sized beers ready...you only get to do this once a year, people. Game starts at 3pm.

Tweak Bird, Kandi Coated

tuesday 3

Check the On Stage column in this issue for a writeup on one of the loudest and proudest rock duos you're likely to find. 8pm, Summit Saloon & Stage, 125 NW Oregon Ave.

International Guitar Night

tuesday 3

This is the longest-running "mobile guitar festival" in North America. Each year three of the world's foremost acoustic guitarists join IGN founder Brian Gore to perform their latest originals and exchange musical ideas. That's convenient...let the culture come to you! 7pm. $20, $25 reserved. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St.

The Grateful Dead Community: Alive and Well

wednesday 4

For all the Deadheads out there in Bend...of which there are plenty, here's a way to reflect on the status of your fandom as Natalie Dollar explores how fans of the Grateful Dead have a livelier and more diverse dialogue since Jerry Garcia's passing than they did during the band's heyday. We haven't heard how the parking lot scene is going to shape up, so you might want to grab a veggie burrito before you head onto campus. 12pm. OSU-Cascades Campus, Cascades Hall, Rm 118, 2600 NW College Way. Free.

My Own Two Feet

thursday 5

This flick follows filmmakers and riders as they trek through the Sierras strictly by foot. The environmentally low-impact approach diverges from the helicopter, snowmobile and snow cat operations used by other ski flicks. This screening showcases a boatload of giveaways from local sponsors as well as a DJ after the movie. Funds go to the Central Oregon Environmental Center. 6pm Thursday, Feb 5. The Summit Saloon and Stage, 125 NW Oregon Ave. $6, $10/for two.

Gerry Lopez Book Signing

thursday 5

Gerry Lopez, in addition to being one of Bend's coolest celebrities and our only real surf legend, is also an author. He recently penned Surf Is Where You Find It and will be at the Between the Covers to sign your copy. Not every day you get to meet a legend, eh? 6:30pm-9pm. Between the Covers, 645 NW Delaware Ave.
