Our Picks for the Week of 4/1-4/9

1st Annual Bend International Comedy Competition

wednesday-saturday 1-4

We've always said that comedy is hard to find in this town, but not this week as the first edition of the Bend International Comedy Competition takes over several venues in town. Local comedian Morgan Preston is one of the producers of this event and has roped in comedians from around the country, including Tommy Savitt who's taken home top honors at the Boston Comedy fest and the Seattle International Comedy Competition. The first three nights are preliminaries, followed by the finals at the Tower on Saturday night with 20-minute sets from all the finalists. Weds-Thurs, April 1-2, 8pm Seven Nightclub, 1033 NW Wall St. Fri, April 3, 8pm: Baltazar's Ristorante, 1465 SW Knoll Ave. Sat, April 4, 8pm: Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St. All events $25, $85 all-event passes are also available.

JoAnna Lee

thursday 2

If you're a singer songwriter fan here in town, you should probably check out this soulful local artist. Lee's voice is bold yet smooth with some jazzy hints of Joss Stone and the powerful vibe of Grace Potter combined for an impressive total package. 8pm. Bendistillery Martini Bar, 850 NW Brooks St.

Mark Ransom's Birthday Bash

friday 3

What better way to say "happy birthday" to one of Bend's local music movers-and-shakers than to come jam out to his jam-o-riffic band, the Mostest. This show includes Ransom on guitars and vocals, Pat Pearsall on bass, Lindsey Elias on the drums and Timmy Schroeder on lead guitar. 10pm-11:30pm. Astro Lounge, 147 NW Minnesota Ave.

Trashformations Kick Off Party

friday 3

One man's trash might not be another man's treasure, but it might be his art. That's the case with Trashformations, one of Oregon's most unique artistic events in which artists take discarded items and build art that will be on display through April 17. The final results are far from garbage, with past years' events producing some quality pieces, so get acquainted with the project at this First Friday Kick Off Party. Lahaina Galleries, 425 SW Powerhouse Dr.

Elephant Revival

friday 3

This Nederland, Colo. band plays a delicate yet full brand of experimental folk coupled with a range of other Americana influences. The vocal abilities of this band alone are worth the ticket price, so check it out. 9pm. Silver Moon Brewing Co., 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

Dirty Penny

Town Hall Meeting with Ron Wyden

monday 6

You got something to say to the folks over there in Washington, D.C.? Well you can start by voicing your concerns to Oregon's own Senator Ron Wyden at this town hall meeting. Something tells me there's going to be some bailout talk. 12:30pm Bend Elks Club, 63120 Boyd Acres Rd.

Sol'Jibe

wednesday 8

A lot of bands say that they play "world" music, but that's especially true with this Nevada-based crew that can really plan just about everything the globe has to offer, wrapping it all together with a bit of gypsy soul. And they're doing it all for free at this Wednesday night show. All ages. 7pm. Free. McMenamins Old St. Francis School, 700 NW Bond St.
