Our Picks for the week of 8/21-8/26

Necktie Killer

thursday 21

There's nothing wrong with ska music, even if you're part of the faction that since 1998 have believed the horn-happy style is inherently flawed. If you need a local dose of ska revival, Necktie Killer can bring it to you in a full-speed, full-fledged ska/punk/funk attack that they learned while playing music together at Redmond High School. This is why we need to keep music in the public schools people. 9pm, Long Shots Pub, 314 SE 3rd St.

thursday 21

Are you worried about the national debt? Well, you probably will be (perhaps rightfully so) after viewing this documentary that addresses our nation's problem with maintaining fiscal sustainability. Following the screening of the doc, you can look in as five of the nation's most notable financial leaders and policy experts (like Warren friggin' Buffet) discuss the issues in a town-hall style meeting live from Omaha. Tickets available at the box office or at FathomEvents.com. 7:30pm. Old Mill Stadium 16, 680 SW Powerhouse Dr.

Bike & Brew Weekend

friday-sunday 22-24

Cog Wild brings you the best of the trails and the breweries in one weekend. Check out various Cascade mountain trails and get in about 47 miles total. After you sweat it up on the daily ride, head to Deschutes Brewery, Cascade Lakes Brewery and Bend Brewing Company to sample the latest microbrews and cool off before you head off to sleep at the Phoenix Inn, no camping required. For information on this and other tours, go to www.cogwild.com. Cog Wild Bicycle Tours, 135 NW 17th St. 385-7002.

The Sweet Harlots

friday 22

Maybe you've seen this local duo (made up of Laurel Brauns on the guitar and Julie Southwell on violin) in the last month or so, but if you haven't, it might be worth getting down to the Moon this Friday and checking out their indie folk prowess. 8pm. Silver Moon Brewing Co. 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

Songwriters' Showcase

friday 22

If there's one thing we certainly don't have a shortage of here in Bend, it's talented songwriters, and perhaps it's about time we show them off in style. At this event benefiting the Ronald McDonald House, the Bond Brothers play host to talented locals like Eric Tollefson, Leif James, Dennis McGregor, Shireen Amini, Joanna Lee and Shane Cook. 7pm. $20/adults, $15/students, children. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St., 317-0700. Visit towertheatre.org for advance tickets.

Wilco, Fleet Foxes

saturday 23

Holy Moses, do we love us some Wilco here around the office and we had to pinch ourselves in the eyeballs when we read that they were coming to lil' 'ol Bend. Needless to say, we welcome the Chicago alt-country legends. We also think highly of the young men of Fleet Foxes, who you can read about in the Sound section. Advance tickets available through Ticketmaster. Gates 5pm, show time 6:30. $35. Les Schwab Amphitheater, 344 Shevlin Hixon Dr.

Beck, Cold War Kids

sunday 24

Yeah, Beck called our office last week...no big deal. You can turn the page and read what he had to say. Another reason to get yer buns to this show is Cold War Kids, a Southern California slightly new wavy, but soulful act sure to get your body moving. All ages. Advance tickets at the Ticket Mill and other Ticketmaster outlets. 6:30pm. $38. Les Schwab Amphitheater.

CSNY: Déj Vu

tuesday 26

The Indie Reels series keeps a rolling as we get closer and closer to October's BendFilm Festival with another look at classic rock, this time through the lens of one of its greatest all-star acts. This documentary, directed by one Mr. Neil Young, looks at CSNY's highly political reunion tour and examines the band's anti-war stance. The screening is followed by a panel discussion. R-rated film. Go to towertheatre.org for info. 7pm Tuesday, Aug 26. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St. 317-0700. $10, $7/students.
