Little Bites: Back from the Dead - A time for restaurant resurrections

Chan's Chinese Restaurant reopens, Bend Yogurt Factory to open downtown and Astro Lounge to move around the corner.

The Source staff christened Chan's grand reopening on Third Street this week with a quadruple helping of Chan's heaping lunch specials, including the $2.25 pepper chicken lunch plate teaser that the restaurant put out to promote its culinary resurrection. A favorite among Bend locals, Chan's had been closed for the better part of a year after a fire nearly destroyed the restaurant. However, the bustling lunch hour indicated that despite its extended absence, Chan's hasn't missed a beat. Customers literally lined up on Tuesday during the lunch hour for a chance to see the revamped restaurant, which spent handsomely on a full makeover. The result is a dining room that feels familiar to longtime customers, but is essentially an entirely new eatery.

In other openings, the owners of Snap Fitness reportedly snapped up the recently vacated DiLusso space on the corner of Franklin and Bond streets and are preparing to open another self-serve yogurt shop, dubbed the Bend Yogurt Factory. The business would be the third self-serve yogurt purveyor joining Cuppa Yo and Goody's Chocolates, which added self-yogurt machines to its eastside location in the Forum Shopping Center last year. Cuppa Yo, meanwhile, is in the process of finishing improvements on its own eastside lease space across the street from Hola!, making for three reasons why the eastside can be your new date night location: 1)Pilot Butte's indie movies, 2) Hola's Peruvian ribs and 3) Cuppa Yo's chocolate sprinkles.

Also on the move is the Astro Lounge, which confirmed this week a long-standing rumor that it would be relocating in downtown this summer after the lease expires on its Minnesota Avenue location. One of Bend's favorite watering holes, the Astro will be relocating to the site of the short-lived downtown Subway shop location on Bond Street.
