Liner Notes: Feeling Grouchy?

GROUCH: OUT TO STEAL YOUR CHRISTMAS.At the rate that hip-hop shows - both indie acts as well as bling-and-boast rappers-are stomping through town as of late, it seems we need a whole space dedicated to hip-hop music in this paper. While we don't exactly have real estate reserved for that purpose quite yet, we will give you a de facto column with this update on the Grouch and Eligh show coming up at the Domino Room on Monday night.

Grouch and Eligh belong to the Living Legends crew and if the name "Living Legends" doesn't strike you as familiar, you don't need to go past that phrase to understand the skill set of these dudes. The California-based crew consists of eight indie hip hop artists that have been putting out records since the mid-1990s. While this show doesn't feature only a quarter of the Living Legends roster, Monday's stacked bill does, however, include quality acts like Bayliens and Paul Dateh.

Grouch has hilariously and appropriately dubbed this tour the "How the Grouch Stole Christmas Tour" and while he's not going to ruin your holidays, he might ruin your love of lesser talented MCs. With a lyrical style he loves to refer to as "artsy," Grouch weaves intellectually stimulating rhymes (that can be funnier than all hell at times yet artfully sentimental at others) over jazz and blues-inspired instrumentals, as heard on his latest record, Show You the World.

In recent interviews, Grouch has mentioned he wouldn't mind making this holiday tour an annual thing. And you know what, we wouldn't mind either.

Grouch, Eligh, Bayliens, Paul Dateh

8pm doors, 9pm show. Monday, December 8. Domino Room. 51 NW Greenwood Ave. $15/advance, $18/advanced. All ages.
