Now Playing: Source Weekly Home Concerts

Concerts are, as many of you know, something we talk about a lot here at the Source Weekly. Usually, our calendar is filled with them.

Live shows are so much fun—and, in the era of coronavirus-induced isolation we find ourselves in—also a privilege we might not quite have understood so deeply even just a month ago.

Bill Powers, one half of the Bend band, Honey Don't and guitarist for The Silvertone Devils, likes live music too—in fact, he likes it so much that he hosts a weekly open mic, the Storytellers Open Mic, each Tuesday at The Commons in downtown Bend.


With that on hold for now, we've put our heads together to begin curating a series of Home Concerts, featuring Central Oregon musicians playing from their own personal quarantine spots.

Check back here often for new updates to our concerts, and for dates for Live Concerts, featuring multiple musicians doing sets via livestream.

Jake Soto plays a lively mix of American and bluegrass. He performed at this week's Storytellers Open Mic—a partnership between us and Bill Powers to create these Home Concerts.

Alicia Viani, published 4/16

Alicia Viani is a familiar face in the music scene of Central Oregon. She released her debut album in February, covering what Source music writer Isaac Biehl described as one, "telling tales of racism, suicide, women's sexual empowerment and more. Being a mental health therapist, Viani is exposed often to those areas of life, and speaks out about them in her songwriting." Here she is performing as part of the Storytellers Open Mic.

Eric Leadbetter, published 4/15

Eric Leadbetter plays frequently around Central Oregon. A story the Source published in 2018 called him one of the "hardest-working musicians in Central Oregon, performing nearly every day each month." Here is as part of the Storytellers Open Mic, played from his home!

Bill Powers/Duck Duck Gray Duck, published 4/13

Bill Powers, who we are partnered with to curate this series of Home Concerts, recorded this one last week with partner Shelley Gray, paying homage to the duo's past band, Sweet Sunny South, an old-time stringband/jugband that specialized in kids music. "Duck Duck Grey Duck" is Sweet Sunny South's alter ego.

Boo is a regular at the in-person Storytellers Open Mic, and posted this performance as part of the first Storytellers' Facebook Live event.

Kurt Silva, published 4/12

A past Source show announcement on our site said of Silva: "Kurt's early musical influences were the some of Country Music's pioneers. The Carter Family, Jimmy Rogers, Hank Williams, and Johnny Cash all had an influence on his musical path. He picked up his dad's old guitar, which he still plays, when he was 12 and has been hooked ever since." He recorded these tracks to play during the Storytellers Open Mic, now happening on Facebook live Tuesdays.

Jeshua Marshall, published 4/6

Jeshua Marshall is a member of the venerable Central Oregon band, Larry and His Flask, and the lead singer of Guardian of the Underdog, in addition to taking part in a host of solo and collaborative projects around the region. Source music writer Isaac Biehl wrote in December that Marshall, "breathes life into every lyric." Marshall was gracious enough to record this video over the weekend as part of the series.

Mark Quon, published 4/5

Mark is a local musician and one half of the Americana and folk duo, The Quons. The Source has written about Quon and his bands on numerous occasions, covering the release albums for band Parlour, as well as his collaborations for local causes. Mark sent us this video, recorded at his home as part of a local open mic series hosted by Northside Bar & Grill.
