Now Playing: Source Weekly Home Concerts

Local music, from Central Oregon musicians' living rooms to yours. New: Matt Puccio Jr., Jaymi Dickinson, Eric Stracener

Concerts are, as many of you know, something we talk about a lot here at the Source Weekly. Usually, our calendar is filled with them.

Live shows are so much fun—and, in the era of coronavirus-induced isolation we find ourselves in—also a privilege we might not quite have understood so deeply even just a month ago.

Bill Powers, one half of the Bend band, Honey Don't and guitarist for The Silvertone Devils, likes live music too—in fact, he likes it so much that he hosts a weekly open mic, the Storytellers Open Mic, each Tuesday at The Commons in downtown Bend.

With that on hold for now, we've put our heads together to begin curating a series of Home Concerts, featuring Central Oregon musicians playing from their own personal quarantine spots.

Check back here often for new updates to our concerts, and for dates for Live Concerts, featuring multiple musicians doing sets via livestream.

Amy and Austin sent us this video of them rocking out at home. Here's what they said about their home concert: "We are The Bangers, a local two-piece band that live together. We are appreciative that we can be playing together right now, appreciative to our neighbors who are ok with it, and to you all for making this happen so local musicians can stay connected. Thanks so much, Amy and Austin"

Alicia Viani, published 4/16

Alicia Viani is a familiar face in the music scene of Central Oregon. She released her debut album in February, covering what Source music writer Isaac Biehl described as one, "telling tales of racism, suicide, women's sexual empowerment and more. Being a mental health therapist, Viani is exposed often to those areas of life, and speaks out about them in her songwriting." Here she is performing as part of the Storytellers Open Mic.

Eric Leadbetter, published 4/15

Eric Leadbetter plays frequently around Central Oregon. A story the Source published in 2018 called him one of the "hardest-working musicians in Central Oregon, performing nearly every day each month." Here is as part of the Storytellers Open Mic, played from his home!

Stoked to play tonight! Thank you Bill Powers for the invite! Tonight's a good warm up for Worthy Brewing presents livestream music with Eric Leadbetter tomorrow night at 6 with my "plugged in" acoustic live looping set! Thanks for tuning in! Bill Powers/Duck Duck Gray Duck, published 4/13

Bill Powers, who we are partnered with to curate this series of Home Concerts, recorded this one last week with partner Shelley Gray, paying homage to the duo's past band, Sweet Sunny South, an old-time stringband/jugband that specialized in kids music. "Duck Duck Grey Duck" is Sweet Sunny South's alter ego.

Kurt Silva, published 4/12

A past Source show announcement on our site said of Silva: "Kurt's early musical influences were the some of Country Music's pioneers. The Carter Family, Jimmy Rogers, Hank Williams, and Johnny Cash all had an influence on his musical path. He picked up his dad's old guitar, which he still plays, when he was 12 and has been hooked ever since." He recorded these tracks to play during the Storytellers Open Mic, now happening on Facebook live Tuesdays.

Cinda and Ron Johnson, published 4/12, playing as part of the Storytellers Open Mic

Steven Hartwell, recorded 4/3, published 4/6

Steven Hartwell is the keyboard player for the Reputations Band and for the Soul'd Out band in Bend. He's also a local songwriter who does a lot of writing for other artists through the Featherlight Studio in Bend and just finished the Jess Ryan Band record. He told the Source Weekly: "Rocket Man (c.1972 Elton John/Bernie Taupin ) really spoke to me personally. Elton was the reason I became a piano player. It perfectly captures the feeling of drifting and isolated loneliness we are all experiencing at the moment."

Jeshua Marshall, published 4/6

Jeshua Marshall is a member of the venerable Central Oregon band, Larry and His Flask, and the lead singer of Guardian of the Underdog, in addition to taking part in a host of solo and collaborative projects around the region. Source music writer Isaac Biehl wrote in December that Marshall, "breathes life into every lyric." Marshall was gracious enough to record this video over the weekend as part of the series.

Mark Quon, published 4/5

Mark is a local musician and one half of the Americana and folk duo, The Quons. The Source has written about Quon and his bands on numerous occasions, covering the release albums for band Parlour, as well as his collaborations for local causes. Mark sent us this video, recorded at his home as part of a local open mic series hosted by Northside Bar & Grill.

Johnny Bourbon of The Roof Rabbits, recorded 4/3

We reached out to Johnny Bourbon of The Roof Rabbits this afternoon, after publishing Isaac Biehl's review of the band's new EP, "Arizona." Johnny responded with a new Home Concert within the hour. For those curious, Johnny told this story to the Source, during an Aug. 2019 interview, about the origins of the band's name: "During World War I in Europe there were extreme food shortages and it was commonplace for a butcher or restaurant to sell you cat meat and tell you it was rabbit... Cat meat being passed off as rabbit became known as Roof Rabbit."

Here's Johnny, in his living room Friday.

Singer-Songwriter Joel Chadd, recorded 4/2

Born into a music-filled household in Corvallis, Oregon, singer-songwriter Joel Chadd has been creating & playing music for the last decade. His musical journey began with drums at age 12, transitioning to guitar as an adult (with a little banjo here and there). Joel’s music explores the full range of human emotions we all navigate in this lifetime. The Source Weekly described his band’s debut album as "the most basic definition of what makes music so great...the physical feelings and emotions that are experienced defy explanation.” He’s currently working on a solo album and building custom guitars as a luthier at Preston Thompson Guitars in Sisters, Oregon.

The first Home Concert, from Bill Powers, recorded 4/1:
