Out of Town 1/29-2/4

friday 30

Star Trek: Oregon Symphony

Set your phasers to geek! If this event is actually interesting to you—a top-notch symphony covering the soaring soundtrack from the final frontier—then you probably care that the specific soundtrack to be covered (and film simultaneously shown) is the 2009 J.J. Abrams' movie, with music composed by Michael Giacchino. And, yes, there is a costume contest. And, yes, you probably should consider getting a life. 7:30 pm. Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. $35.

saturday 31

High Rollers vs. Break Neck Betties

Two of the Rose City Roller's teams go head-to-head in a battle of speed, force and fierceness. The High Rollers—featuring players with names like Brawn Swanson, Feliz Brutality, and Napoleon Blownapart—test their mettle against the Break Neck Betties—starring Licker-n-Split, Fonda Brawls, and Chest-Nutz. If the names didn't tip you off, this is not your 1970s roller derby. Think WWE meets hockey on wheels. There's a reason no one under 18 is allowed to sit alongside the track. 7 pm. The Hangar at Oaks Park. $14-20.

School of Rock Presents: The Best of Portland 4

Not only does the school of rock provide music education for aspiring Portland youngsters, they also keep it local. Recounting music form bands and artists that are widely considered the best the Rose City has to offer—Stephen Malkmus, Red Fang, Aan, Wild Ones, Musee Mecanique, Natasha Kmeto, Guantanamo Baywatch, 1939 Ensemble, The Shivas, Gaytheist, Summer Cannibals, The Body, Like a Villain, Tiburones, WL, Modern Kin, Bearcubbin', Lee Corey Oswald, Ripley Snell, TxE, The Stops, The Cry and Sama Dams—with actual members of those bands, these kids are some lucky little rockers. 8 pm. Wonder Ballroom. $15-18.

Super Bowl/Puppy Bowl

In a mascot fight, we are fairly sure that a meat-headed Patriot would pound a sea chicken to bits, if he could catch it. But, based on sheer proximity, our Pacific Northwest pride, and lack of knowledge of all things sportsball, we're rooting for Seattle! More likely than avidly watching every play, we will be flipping back and forth between the game and Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl! 3:30 pm. On TV everywhere.
