Amazine Day

Handwritten letters and independent publishing are labeled as antiquated forms of communication in the technological age of text messages and blogs, but the Independent Publishing Resource Center and the Portland Zine Symposium aspire to make the old-school into the new school. They offer certification programs in self-publishing along with classes and workshops on hand-drawn comics and zine publication. Celebrating their craft this weekend, Amazine Day will feature trading and sharing of independently published works, readings, presentations by Aron Nels (illustrator of the popular Portland comic Mr.Wolf) and Sarah Mirk (one of Portland's finest non fiction comic writers) alongside workshops on zine making, letter writing and envelope making. 2 pm. Independent Publishing Resource Center. Free.

Cold War Kids and Superhumanoids

This four piece, assembled in 2004, only gets sharper with age. Its newest album, Dear Miss Lonelyhearts, showcases pointed lyrics over banging ragtime piano with driving percussion and Nathan Willett's signature vocals. The band's live performances are a handclapping, pipe-banging, jump up-and-down goodtime. CWK are touring with L.A. dream-pop new-wave trio, Superhumanoids, of the Silver Lake music scene, birthplace of other indie favorites Local Natives and Silver Sun Pickups. 9 pm. Crystal Ballroom. $20-22.

tuesday 21 The Hood Internet

Blurring the lines of postmodern intellectual property, The Hood Internet is a production duo that specializes in mashups, most notably of hip-hop and indie rock. In addition to their unexpected meldings of artists (notably mixes of Montel Jordan and Arcade Fire or Kanye West and Wilco), the duo created "Album Tacos," a website that combines iconic album covers with images of (duh!) tacos! Obviously, they like to mix the unexpected. All of the tracks by The Hood Internet are available for free online, its blatantly lifted samples makes the band a contributor to the for-free-digital music revolution. 7 pm. Hawthorne Theatre. $15-18.

Seattle Beer Week

Overlapping with Central Oregon's own Beer Week are Seattle's ale festivities. In the same vein as our local events, one week is not enough to fully celebrate all the wonders that beer has to offer so the amended beer week lasts 10 days. Representing Bend's beer culture are 10 Barrel Brewing Co., Boneyard Brewing, Good Life Brewing Co., Cascade Lakes Brewing Co. and, of course, Deschutes Brewery, which will all be in attendance at the Get Bend(t) party, featuring only Central Oregon beers. Sour samplings, tap takeovers, and beer birthdays and bike-and-brews are on the long list of events. Cheers! Various locations. See seattlebeerweek.com for more.
