Show Ponies

Los Angeles may not be the epicenter for string bands, but the Show Ponies have crept their way up into the surrounding mountains and tapped into the clear water, rolling hills aesthetic. With fiddle, banjo and guitar, joined by the occasional harmonica riff and a mix between male and female lead vocals, the band has locomotive momentum. 9 pm. Thurs., Jan. 15. Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Dr. $5 adv./$7 door.

Jazz at the Oxford

Grammy award winning trumpet player and flugelhornist Randy Brecker has played with the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Frank Zappa, James Taylor and more. Brecker is joined by other legends of the industry, George Colligan—a jazz artist, and former instructor at the Julliard School—and composer and saxophonist, Ada Rovatti. Fri.-Sat., Jan. 16-17. Various times. SOLD OUT.

Tribal Seeds

The Winter Chillin' tour, which will take Southern California band Tribal Seeds across the western United States this winter, is counterintuitive. The band's rock-infused bouncy reggae is better suited for a tropical beach with a piña colada in-hand than the slopes of a beer-loving ski town. Lucky that the positive vibe-driven music is loveable on ice or under the sun. 8 pm. Wed., Jan. 23. The Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave. $17.
