Jarred Gastriech

This special edition of the Source Suggests covers a few of our many picks from the incredible lineup of the 2014 Sisters Folk Festival. The festival is mostly sold out, but there are a handful of Sunday tickets still available online at sistersfolkfestival.org.

Sisters Folk Festival, Sept. 5-7

Shakey Graves

This charming Austin singer-songwriter is a throwback to the sweet, whiskey-soaked folk of yore, melting hearts with percussion-strung guitar playing, trail-tested poetics and movie-star good looks. His forthcoming album—Story of My Life due out in October—opens with a gorgeous country-style duet with Esmé Patterson of Paper Bird (read below). I'm not guaranteeing anything, but these two talented crooners performing "Dearly Departed" live would be a showstopper. Think next generation, hipster Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty. Friday, 8 pm, Sisters Art Works. Saturday, 1 pm, Fivepine. Saturday, 8:15 pm, Village Green Park.

Paper Bird

Denver-based seven-piece baroque folk act, Paper Bird, is a band built on deep relationships. With two sets of siblings, and a slew of close friends at the core of their loveable music, there is a joyful familiarity and comradery to the hand-clapping boot-kickers, powerful harmonies and sweet fluttering waltzes. Friday, 9:30 pm, Sisters Art Works. Saturday, 2 pm, Melvin's Market. Saturday, 7 pm, Village Green Park. Saturday, 10 pm, Belfry.

The Brothers Comatose

Fiery string arrangements that lend a body to swaying and stomping, laced with gritty back porch harmonies and layered strings. The band has deep affinities for blues, rock, country and traditional music, allowing the music to easily oscillate between high-stepping swing jams to punchy, slow-rolling acoustic melodies. Friday, 11 pm, Melvin’s Market. Saturday, 3 pm, The Open Door. Saturday, 6 pm, Fivepine. Saturday, 11:30 pm, The Belfry.
