The Land of Sex-cess Glam-Rapper Mickey Avalon doesn’t stray from what he knows

How does a guy rebound from growing up with a drug dealing mom and a heroin-addicted father? After sufficiently distancing himself from those demons, he becomes a rap artist with smooth flow, an edgy presentation and sex on the brain.

Hollywood hip-hop artist Mickey Avalon leveraged all of those characteristics when he recorded his sophomore album Loaded. Released in April, it’s a record that samples everything from blues rock to ‘80s synth as backdrops for deliciously dirty rhymes, and one he had to jump through hoops to make.

“I had the record ready,” explained Avalon during a recent phone interview. “But the [record] label was taking too long and I didn’t want to wait. I had to go somewhere else to put it out.”

With six years between albums, Avalon had turned to his glam-rap concerts as a means to get his new songs out. These are concerts that typically feature Avalon shirtless in his tight, low-cut jeans accompanied by choreographed dancers wearing fishnet stockings, and drinking and smoking on stage.

Avalon indicates there will be something new on his current tour.

“There is only one dancer this time and we have some crazy visuals projected on a screen behind the stage that sync up with the music,” said Avalon. “If a song has a music video, then some of it will be incorporated, too.”

While a lot of the sexually charged stories told on Loaded are tongue-in-cheek tales and not personal to the rapper, Avalon doesn’t really see himself as someone who can write about anything else.

“It’s not like sex is all I think about,” said Avalon. “But I don’t think songs should be about politics or religion. Since I can’t write a good love song… sex and drugs are all that go into my music.”

So far that formula is working. Everything Avalon does is a kind of musical coitus, and fans keep lining up to indulge in his version of intercourse.
