Beer News: The Ascendency of Craft Beer, Personal Kegs and Turkey Day Pairings

All Hail King Craft

Once upon a time, Budweiser was (literally) the King of Beers. But while Anheuser-Busch brewed an impressive 30 million barrels in 2003, it dropped down by nearly half over the next decade—to 16 million barrels in 2013. For the first time, craft beers eked out a victory over the macro brew giants, producing 16.1 million barrels last year. According to Budweiser's parent company AB/InBev, almost 44 percent of the 21-to-27-year-old market has never even tried Budweiser. Is it any wonder the company wanted to buy 10 Barrel?

I'll Tap That

The Kickstarter crowd funding page for the uKeg Pressurized Growler (effectively a travel keg), created by Portland-based GrowlerWerks, has blown its fundraising goal of $75,000 out of the water. With 13 days still to go, the project is approaching the $1 million mark (currently more than $900,000 has been pledged). It reached its goal in one day. That impressive response, which would seem to indicate an untapped market (pardon the pun), does not yet earn it a spot among the most-funded Kickstarter projects. (The top spot on that list is held by a cooler.)

Birds and Brews

What craft brews pair best with turkey and all the Thanksgiving fixings? Paste magazine asked the founders of a few craft breweries for their recommendations. IPAs ranked highly among the 33 suggestions from the likes of Sierra Nevada, Dogfish Head, and New Belgium. What local brews are you stocking up on the for the holidays?
