Horsing Around:Polo taking hold in High Desert

It might seem counter intuitive that in the midst of the ongoing recession the newest sport take hold in the High Desert would be polo, the activity most associated with British Royalty. Regardless, the relatively young and locally based Cascade Polo Club is demonstrating that the sport has an audience here in Central Oregon. Building on the success of its recent matches at the Fraley Ranch  Tumalo, off Gosney Road, east of Bend, the club has another event scheduled for Aug. 21. The event, which also serves as a fundraiser for the Deschutes Land Trust, Sparrows Club, Redmond Humane Society and Equine Outreach, is the first in the region to be sanctioned by the US Polo Association, said organizer Dan Harrison. If you’re interested in checking out the match, the gates open  at noon on Sun. Aug. 21. The match begins at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the gate. Kids 12 and under are free. Prizes for best men’s and women’s hats. Yes, hats, -- It’s polo. Info, campfraleyranch.com.
