Second Sunday: Local Author Fair

Bend, OR—Celebrate local writers at the Downtown Bend Public Library at Second Sunday on August 14, 2016, at 2:00 pm. The event is free and open to the public.

Local authors, representing a variety of genres including memoir, poetry and guide books, will read from their work at the 5th annual Local Author Fair. “Central Oregon has a deep and rich writing tradition and the Library is pleased to host an afternoon of local writers sharing their work,” said Community Relations Manager Chantal Strobel. All authors will have books to sell (cash or check preferred) following the readings.

The featured writers were selected from a pool of applicants from around the county. “The Local Authors event remains popular. Deschutes Public Library is pleased to shine the spotlight on local authors at the August Second Sunday,” said Strobel. Nicole Meier, author of the recently published House of Bradbury, is one of the  twelve participating authors. She says events like the Local Author Fair are important for both writers and readers. “Author events, especially local ones, are a wonderful way to connect writers with readers. Readers have a chance to hear the backstory behind an author's work and get to ask questions and share feedback,” Meier says. “Events like the Local Author Fair personalize the relationship between author and audience,” says local poet Don Kunz, who will also be in attendance at the Local Author Fair. Kunz, who will be reading from his chapbook of poetry Handmade History: Poems of the American West, says author events help call attention to books that might otherwise escape notice.

In addition to the Local Author Fair, the Library sponsors and hosts a variety of workshops and events designed to support local writers. Other Library efforts that support and enrich the local writing community include the Author! Author! literary series, which brings best-selling and award-winning authors to Central Oregon, Second Sunday, the Library’s monthly celebration of the written word, the monthly Teen Writing Group at the Downtown Bend Library and workshops led by local authors from a variety of genres, including memoir, food writing, travel writing and poetry.
