The Traveling Camera: Big Air at WinterFest

Flying through the snow at WinterFest.

Christian Heeb is a travelling photographer based in Bend. We'll have one of his photos posted each week hereon Bent. He and his wife, Regula, are the founders of the Cascades Center of Photography, a workshop center, gallery and studio here in Bend.

Winterfest could not be more wintery. Shooting the event, the biggest challenge was to keep the cameras dry and the fingers warm.

To capture the mood of the action at the Rail Jam. I pushed the ISO of my camera to 1250. You need to keep your shutter speed high if you want to catch these guys in the air. I used my flash to illuminate the snow coming down which  added to the drama of the effect.

I positionened myself so that the snowboarders would be in cool action before they hit the floodlight and get washed out. Still, I wanted to light in the picture to backlight the scene and work as a key element in the composition.

It was an awesome night for taking pictures but then I thought how easy shooting in the Caribbean is...well that will be my next trip in March.
