Treatment Homes Schedule Open House

After drawing the ire of neighbors in northeast Bend, the county has scheduled a pair of open houses for the community and neighbors to learn more about a pair of mental health transition homes that are slated to open in the area around Pilot Butte.
The homes are part of a contract agreement between the county and the state to improve the overall level of mental health treatment and to help recovering patients transition more smoothly into the community. But the decision to site the homes in a pair of residential areas with little notification to neighbors created an uproar recently. The homes, which will be run by a contractor on behalf of the county and state, are five-bed facilities designed to house local mental health patients and others exiting the Oregon mental health system who aren't under the supervision of state psychiatric board. Neighbors were notified of the planned opening of the two facilities via a mailbox flyer. By law, city's cannot prevent mental health transition homes from locating in residential areas to prevent discrimination against the mentally ill, however the county is now broadening its outreach. The open houses are slated for Thurs, Aug. 28 from 4:30-6:30 at 1646 NE Edgecliff Circle and 1058 12th Street.
