Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe is, of course, great access for rentals and direct access to the Deschutes River, and is known for their free Wednesday evening summer concert series, Pickin' & Paddlin'.
But it is not all Deschutes River for Bend's paddle board mecca. James Fredericks, Manager for Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe, recently shared some of his favorite nearby lakes for canoeing and kayaking.
"Sparks (Lake) is the closest, and clean," he points out. Fredericks also explains that there are no powerboats allowed, and the view, with Mt Bachelor reflecting on a calm surface, is remarkable.
He also recommends paddling at Hosner Lake, tucked between Elk Lake and the western front of Mt Bachelor.
"It is really two lakes joined by a passageway," he says. Stocked with brown trout and Atlantic salmon, that lake is also popular for fishermen; but, Fredericks assures that the crystal clear water is worth the trip. "What's really remarkable is you can see fish beneath you."
And, as a final suggestion, he offers Paulina Lake. About 15 miles east from La Pine, the lake offers a rare treat, hot springs along the northern shore.
