Rain be damned, Bite of Bend is the place to be today with a full slate of family activities, entertainment and food, food, food. Here’s a sampling of staff picks for today’s events:

Top Chef Comp:

Eight of Bend’s kitchen maestros square off in a head-to-head cookoff, a la Iron Chef.

Today’s action features the round robin competition: Tetherow vs Mt. Bachelor; Old Mill Brew Werks vs. Chow; 5 Fusion Vs. 10 Barrel; and Jackson’s Corner vs. Pine Tavern round out the culinary throwdown.

The outdoor kitchen fires up at 11:30 a.m. with the final pairing taking the stage at 4p.m.

Mixology

If you’re more interested in cocktails that cuisine, for $15 you can take in two days worth of seminars and samples at the Northwest Spirits and Mixology show featuring some of the Northwest most innovative bartenders pulling together drinks using regional spirits and ingredients. Exhibitions run from 11 a.m. – 9p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. Sunday. For those who aren’t ready to commit to the full weekend of exhibitions, you can check out the Bartenders Brawl at 4 p.m. tonight at no charge.

Live Music

Music wise The festival is packed as ever with great music, but don’t miss Whitey Morgan channeling Waylon Jennings on the main stage tonight. We’re also recommending that you check out Stairway Denied, featuring Lay It Out’s own Noah Stroup on vocals. Stairway begins channeling Page and Plant at 5 p.m. Hometown faves the Autonomics come on at 6 before handing the mic off to Whitey Morgan and the 78s. Bounce back on Sunday to close out a weekend of food, drink and sound with eight piece brass and beats of Polyrhythmics.

Beyond the Bite:

If you’re looking for something more intimate than the Bite’s mainstage on Saturday night, McMenamins has Portland author, musician and Oregon Book Award winner Willy Vlautin in town for a night of storytelling and songs as part of its fantastic Words on Tap series.  7 p.m. All ages.
