Switching Gears: Winter Ski Conditioning

There is nothing that wholly gets you into ski shape, than, well, skiing. But there are ways to prepare for the season, avoid injury, make solid turns with confidence, and lessen the first-day-back muscle soreness. Wearing your ski boots while watching TV is one type of condition ing, but getting off the couch is the first real step to entering ski season fluidly.

Winter Ski Conditioning

Bend Physical Therapy (Therapeutic Associates Physical Therapy) currently offers conditioning classes with drills and strength circuits for power and agility. It's all about replicating muscle movements in skiing, and cross training is just that, a cross and mix not just in equipment but in muscles movement. Every Tuesday through Nov. 19 at Bend Physical Therapy.

Nordic Ski Conditioning

Central Oregon Community College offers just strictly Nordic. Each session features a mix of strength, specific foot exercises, technique drills, and cardio and aerobic components. The class is led by crosscountry coach J.D. Downing who promises to have participants move 99 percent of the time. Any level of skier can make any class session match fitness goals, tennis shoes are all that's required. The class meets Monday and Wednesday evenings through Nov. 19 at the COCC Mazama Fit Center.
