Wax 'Em Up

Recent plummeting temps have prompted winter-ready planning, and having our bodies in tune to winter is as important as having our gear in tune. Local ski shops are offering ski tuning and waxing clinics, so delve into the basement and the garage, dig up last winter's gear and get it into shape.

Crow's Feet Commons (875 NW Brooks St.)

Offered Tuesdays through the winter season, this free hot waxing clinic covers the basics on how to tune and wax your skis at home. Glide waxing techniques can be applied to all types of skis and snowboards, and the clinic defines that "wax-less" cross country skis still need wax on tips and tails. "Even if you have no intention of doing your own ski waxing, this clinic will give the knowledge you need to make sure your skis are maintained and performing at their best," their website explains. "And there's no need to bring your own skis." Easy enough.

Sunnyside Sports (930 NW Newport Ave.)

Sunnyside Sports offers hot waxing clinics for Nordic skis on Saturday mornings. So before you go, know your gear is a-go. Clinics begin this Saturday and run through the season. A quick one-hour tutorial for tuning and waxing basics for Nordic skis. Saturday, Nov. 15, 10 am. Sunnyside says just swing on by the shop.

Pine Mountain Sports (255 SW Century Dr.)

Mirrored after popular bicycle maintenance clinics, waxing clinics will provide direction in aiding all skiers and boarders in effective waxing and maintaining ski and snowboards all season. And classes are limited to just 12 for effective training. Next clinic: Tuesday, Nov. 18, 7:30 pm. Call 541-385-8080 to register.
