Either way, we're not sure if 2008 stacked up to 2007's monster gaming year, but there were certainly a few bright spots worth revisiting.
10. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of Patriots. The original MGS was what hooked me on the first Sony game machine and this title was well worth the wait. Could this be the end of Solid Snake? Don't bet on it!
9. Mario Kart Wii. Even though the Mario Kart franchise is 16-plus years old it still kicks ass. With on-line multi-player for the next generation and addictive game play, MK Wii never gets old.
8. Little Big Planet. Sony has been hanging on in 3rd place in the console wars, but they pull out a few surprises, including this little gem. Creating game levels and sharing them may just be one of the few original concepts last year.
7. Fable II. When it comes to the Xbox 360 the best role playing game yet is Fable II. Oblivion held the reigns for a while, but even after a rocky start, with patches needed to make it play right, Fable II will keep you occupied for some time to come.
6. Soulcalibur IV. I am not big on fighting games but when you take the Sega Dreamcast original fighting game and update it with two of the coolest Star Wars characters, Yoda and the badass Darth Vader, it got me hooked and wanting to pick fights in the virtual world.
5. Fallout 3. One of the best older PC games finally takes a turn on the console front, Fallout 3 takes the best of the role-playing genre and adds enough post apocalyptic action to keep you busy into the new year.
4. Dead Space. This one kinda went under the radar, but it's a fantastic horror game. Taking a cue from the Alien movies, you are a space marine trying to figure out what happened to the crew of an abandoned ship. In space, no one can hear you play.
3. Prince of Persia. A lot of sequels could learn a thing or two from this game. Like the Sands of Time this has great game play, but with a enough changes and twists to make it a worthy sequel.
2. Grand Theft Auto. Rockstar did it again. The vast open road is even more ambitious than ever, and with a more realistic look and feel to Liberty City this game turned out to be a winner. Silly rabbit, this game is NOT for kids.
1. (Tie) Call of Duty: World at War; Call of Duty: Call of Duty 4 . COD:COD was a very popular game updated to modern warfare. Even though it came out at the end of 2007 it's still a hot game and to release another so soon was a risky move that paid off. COD goes back to the WW II era for World at War and turns it up a notch again. Both are great games.
