Our Top Winter Events: Mark your calendar ‘cause you don’t want to miss these

Dates of the local's favorite winter events.

Skjersaa’s Rail Jam and Tetherow Big Air Competition

Dates TBA, stay tuned to the Source for more info

Both events are a great opportunity to check out some of Central Oregon’s best ski and snowboard talent. And you don’t even have to leave town! The Skjersaa’s rail jam will kick off the season in mid-November with boarders and skiers slip-sliding on some epic rails. In mid-December, check out the Big Air Comp at Tetherow to see top-shelf freestyle riders huck their meat for fun and profit. And proceeds go to a good cause. Everybody wins!

Dirsken Derby

Dec. 14-16, Mt. Bachelor

The sixth annual event is a banked slalom race and promises to draw some talented boarders to Bachelor. Last year the Dirsken Derby course had 26 banked turns between the two tracks. Competitors range in skill and category from elite to amateur to splitboard to women and beyond. Proceeds from the benefit go to Tyler Eklund, a local snowboarder who was paralyzed in a 2007 accident. The weekend promises to be snowy good times.

Hoodoo’s New Year’s Eve Party

Dec. 31, Hoodoo

Ski from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Hoodoo resort to round out your 2012, then celebrate the New Year atop the mountain. Ring in 2013 with fireworks and live music at the lodge. Great way to ensure the year starts off right.

Winterfest

Feb. 15-19, Old Mill District, Bend

Hosting Oregon’s largest rail-jam competition, a plethora of bands and some all-around awesome winter activities, Winterfest is the warm little center of the frigidly cold Central Oregon winter season. This year is already shaping up to be a doozey with both a Led Zeppelin and an AC/DC cover band and tons of winter exclusive events like ice carving, snow sculpting and fire-pit building. Once again, the Source Weekly staff will be posting up inside the beer tent—come have a beer or six with us at the lounge.
