Interview with Dr. Byron Maas, Owner

How long has Bend Veterinary Clinic been around? Was it difficult to gain clients’ trust in the beginning?

Bend Veterinary Clinic has been around since 1964 but under the current independent ownership since 2007. When Dr. Maas took over, there was a great response from the community to establish the trust in care. I’ve been a veterinarian in the Central Oregon community since 1991 and have a loyal following. Bend Veterinary Clinic has grown to provide care seven days a week with seven primary care veterinarians.

Can you share some of your most rewarding experiences?

Some of the most rewarding experiences are to work with families getting their first pet with their kids, watch the pet grow up with the family, see the pet mature as the kids become young adults and to be there for them all when it’s time to say goodbye. It is a “Womb to Tomb” relationship that I cherish above many day-to-day experiences.

What has been the biggest challenge of owning a vet clinic?

One of the biggest challenges of owning a veterinary practice is to find a work-life balance, since it’s hard not to be connected all the time to our clients and patients. You develop long lasting relationships where folks always reach out to get help when their pets are in need.  As “their family doctor,” it’s important to help even when you are away, but it’s challenging to balance.

How is Bend Veterinary Clinic making an impact in our community? What does the future hold?

Bend Veterinary Clinic has built a strong reputation of community support over many years.  We are always learning about new and innovative solutions to patient care, keep current on the best protocols for disease prevention and now provide innovative regenerative medicine with stem cell therapy.  We support and work with military and active reserve personnel as our valued employees. Bend Veterinary Clinic supports local rescue and nonprofit organizations, helped initiate Spay and Neuter Clinics in Central Oregon, continue feral cat programs and work with CAMP supporting pet care for those in need among other programs worldwide.
