This past Friday, Maragas Winery earned “outstanding” ratings for two of their wines from acclaimed international wine critic James Suckling.
Doug Maragas, winemaker and vineyard manager for Maragas Winery for over two decades, explained that when encouraged in an email from the Oregon Wine Board that now would be a good time to submit wines for evaluation by James Suckling, arguably, the world’s current foremost wine critic, Maragas submitted two of their wines.
Specifically, Maragas was most interested in wines they’ve grown, produced and bottled right here in Central Oregon. “It would speak volumes about our wines and our viticultural choices for wine production in Central Oregon to see how our wines hold up among the international wine consuming elite in the competitive wine categories of Zinfandel, and Riesling .”
Although Maragas makes multiple limited production wines from Cabernet Franc and Petite Sirah to Pinot Gris, Maragas felt Zinfandel and Riesling were “two opposite ends of the wine type spectrum and would be most telling of the quality and breadth of what we can grow and produce here in Central Oregon.”
The results are in, and both wines received outstanding ratings by James Suckling. Legal Zin received a score of 90, and the dry Riesling Cuvée 23 received a score of 93.
After medalling in the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition for decades and this current evaluation by James Suckling, the conclusion is straight forward – this is a great place to grow grapes and make very tasty, naturally made, wine.
