WTF is up with this?? FundRace 2008 reports that Democrat Barack Obama beat Republican John McCain by a ratio of almost 2 to 1 in contributions from Bend residents in the second quarter of this year.
According to the site, Obama collected a total of more than $51,500 from the 97701 and 97702 area codes during the quarter, compared to only a bit over $13,000 for McCain. In the generally more affluent 97701 area code the approximate totals were Obama $32,800, McCain $2,900; in the 97702 area code it was Obama $18,800, McCain $10,300.
More than three-quarters of the amount Obama collected came from contributions of $1,000 or less; only nine Bend contributors gave more than $1,000. They included Jeb Barton, owner of Nomadics Tipi Makers; William Whitelaw, president of Econorthwest; Sarah Phipps, a real estate investor; and David Kottkamp, retired, with $1,000 each; attorney Greg Hendrix, $1,095; David Williams, retired, $1,226; John Chaffey, retired, $1,550; Linda Cohen, retired, $1,715; and Robert Cohen, retired, $2,484.
In contrast, more than 75% of what McCain collected in the second quarter came from five donors who gave $1,500 or more each. They were Michael Kendrick, a neurosurgeon, $1,500; Jon Tompkins, retired, $1,850; and developer Michael Humphreys, Judith Humphreys, and home builder Hayden Watson, $2,300 each.
The Eye is having a hard time figuring out why Bend Republicans aren’t opening their checkbooks more generously for their party’s presidential nominee-apparent. Maybe they all went broke when the real estate bubble popped. Or maybe they’re just not terribly enthusiastic about their candidate and/or his chances in November.

I’t’s hard for an ordinary human, like McCain, to compete financially with The Newly Risen Black Messiah. The news that Jesus Has Returned As A Black Muslim has turned the world on it’s head. All that is required of a candidate to win over these Yearning Elitists, is to be a smooth talking SOB. Substance is not an issue with elitists. Common sense, reality, truth are not in the running with these elitists. If you look good, have a good education, and your head is firmly ensconced in your elitist ass, you can bring home the Chardonnay…Oddly, Buttcrack is only slightly leading McCain even though he is the Second Coming made manifest.
Why? Because not every voter is swayed by A Smooth Talking Muslim SOB. Some people, believe it or not, actually think. Some of us have resisted the Scrub Your Brain mentality found at Suds ‘R US Brainwasing Emporiums that have served as higher education for far too long.
Obama’s orgasmic legions just might get a jolt of seldom visited reality come Nov.
McCain’s main voting group are retirees, which are notorious cheapskates since they’re on a limited budget. What will matter is who turns out to vote, not money for the campaigns.
You guys need to make up your mind. He can’t be both a “black Muslim” as well as the follower of a black “extremist” church. Pick one. It’s important that your bitterness have some consistency.

Because you asked: An over-educated Harvard asshole, one who hangs out with notorious liberal elitists, and in their company, makes statements about ordinary blue collar Americans as, “clinging to their guns and religion,” is an elitist.
Someone who assess the situation in Iraq, without any recognition of the current reality, who makes up their mind before going there, who ignores the input of our top commanders, who refuses to acknowledge the very real accomplishments of the surge, is also an elitist, but a stupid one.

Or do you just mean that he has more education than you do? (I’ve found that’s typically the case when somebody calls somebody else “over-educated.”)

As for being qualified to be commander-in-chief, two comments: 1) Being commander-in-chief is not the president’s only job. 2) While I appreciate and honor his sacrifice for his country, I don’t see how having been a POW in Vietnam 40 years ago qualifies McCain to be commander-in-chief either.
I have no delusions that Obama is going to transform the world or even make things radically better in the United States. I am supporting him mainly because the alternative is four more years of calamitous Bush/Republican policies. America simply cannot afford that.
HBM: The point your ilk don’t seem to get is that the job of President is not in sales. Obama is an excellent salesman. Were he selling Acme Widgets, you, and those like you, would have each bought a boxcar load and bankrupted yourself. When one is being bowled over by an excellent sales pitch, it is prudent to step back and evaluate the product, particularly if the ‘product’ is a service. Obama is offering us his services. Logically, the next prudent step would be to verify the man’s prior record of delivering service. When you do that, the image of Obama as a combined Jehovah, Woton and Zeus crumbles. Being a community organizer in Chicago is not a qualification. Voting present 104 times in the Illinois legislature instead of taking a stand on issues, is not a qualification. A brief sojourn as an ineffective, miscalculating Senator is not a qualification. Being dead wrong on the Iraqi troop surge is not a qualification. An unwillingness to pursue EVERY avenue available, including drilling and Atomic, to enhance our energy situation is not a qualification. Being recognized as intelligent, but lacking wisdom, is not a qualification. Being an elitist is not a qualification.
Your insistence on coupling McCain and Bush together only detracts from your message. When you are this obviously dishonest, you lose your listener and your last shred of credibility. If your philosophy won’t carry the day for you, standing on it’s own merits, lying in your teeth, smearing and demonizing, surely won’t either. If you don’t really see the vast difference between Bush and McCain, you should go check yourself into the Happy Farm.
What America really can’t afford, is ANY years of Obama. These are tough times. We need a tough leader.

Why shouldn’t I couple them together when politically they’re joined at the hip? McCain agrees with Bush on virtually every important issue — Iraq, energy, health care, taxation, the economy. Why should we believe McCain will offer anything other than four more years of failed Bush policies?
