The right-wing Oregon Catalyst blog couldn’t resist taking a poke at the Bend City Council for voting to designate the Portland Avenue bridge the “Peace Bridge.”
Under the headline “Bend City Council sticks public in eye with Peace Bridge,” the blog sneered: “Liberals may not be good at winning wars or balancing budgets but they are excellent at political platitudes as in the case of Bend City Council renaming their Portland Avenue Bridge as the official Peace Bridge.”
Ummm, how many wars have conservatives won lately? If The Eye’s knowledge of history is correct, the last major war in which this country scored a clear victory was WWII, won by those good liberal Democrats Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry Truman.
And as for balanced budgets, the last president who submitted one to Congress was … drum roll, please: Democrat Bill Clinton. In fact (incredible as it now seems) we had federal budget surpluses in those far-off days of eight years ago.
Ah well. History is not the strong suit of contemporary American conservatives.

Roosevelt and Truman have probably been rolling in their graves since the sleeze bag Clintons got their claws into the Democratic Party.
I can’t believe there are still folks who talk about “sleazebag” Clintons after 8 years of Bush. Keep drinking the kool-aid.
I think it’s sad that people view peace as a part of some political ideology. I understand it but only in America’s culture wars could it get to the point where one political group would give up the notion because the other is perceived as its champion. Where are the Republicans taking back the notion of a peace? Are the Republican’s really the party of “War without End?” I don’t think so.
The Peace Bridge proclamation was a political gesture by a few lame duck councilors who will be gone in a couple of weeks. They gained nothing, but lost significantly.
Gadfly: You must not be reading about all of Bill’s money from overseas that is going to cause concerns about Hillary’s appointment???
