The Bay Area's Beats Antique combine belly dance with tribal trance. Midtown Ballroom, 2/4.

The dilemmas of Footloose could have been solved instantaneously if Kevin Bacon had access to a Beats Antique album. Bomont City Council be damned, there is no way to stand still when you hear their unique hybrid of face-melting dubstep combined with world electronica. Add live percussion, a violin player and a resident belly dancer and you have a Beats Antique show. We challenge you not to dance.

The Oakland trio is more of a traveling circus than a band and has built a grand reputation based on the intensity of their live performances, which often feature outrageous costumes and an abundance of visual and performance art. David Satori and Tommy “Sidecar” Cappel met playing music together (where else?) at a Burning Man decompression party. The two then teamed up with Zoe Jakes, writing music to compliment her experimental style of fusion belly dance. The three have been touring together off and on since 2007. Their latest album, Elektrafone, contains the same element of sexy we’ve come to expect from the Bay Area band, but with more electronic experimentation.

Imagine that you stumbled into a world where human bodies have animal heads and move to tribal beats orchestrated by both modern and traditional instruments. Oh yeah, and everyone is on peyote and chasing the spirit fox. Saturday night the Midtown Ballroom will be transformed into a mini Burning Man courtesy of Beats Antique. Put on your moonboots, get into Kevin-Bacon-can’t-stop-the-music-dance-mode, and prepare for shit to get weird- in a good way.
