That’s the number of votes that separates City Council candidates Chuck Arnold and Scott Ramsay as they head into a state-mandated recount.

Yeah, you read that right, eight stinking votes in a city of more than 70,000 people. At this point, we’re not even ruling out a flat-out tie in this race. In which case, the mayor could flip a coin to determine who will take the seat. Or the Council could just appoint Oran Teater again. As we recall, that’s usually what they do in a pinch like this.
