The Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association has awarded us, the Source Weekly, three awards in its annual newspaper contest.

The Source won 1st place for Best Feature story, 1st place for Best Editorial/Column and 2nd place in the Target Audience Publication General Excellence category in the ONPA Associate Member Publications Contest.

Editor Nicole Vulcan’s story, “Portrait of a Patriot,” covering the low national rate of patriotism and how Central Oregonians interpreted patriotism in 2017, was the winner for Best Feature. In the Editorials/Column contest, the Source editorial board submitted three editorials including: “Oregon’s new distracted driving law could save lives. So why did local legislators oppose it?,” and “Music is a business, too. Don’t treat it different than other businesses,” and “Investing in infill is a better effort than more SDCs.”

For the 2nd place Target Audience Publication General Excellence award, the team submitted a statement outlining the Source’s target audience, along with three complete issues that demonstrated the ways in which the newspaper met the needs of that audience.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by journalists statewide. I feel fortunate to be in place journalistically within our community where the Source Weekly is thriving,” said founder and publisher Aaron Switzer. “I am very proud of the work we have done over the past year and am equally as excited about the future.”
