In anticipation of the release of Baz Luhrmann’s wide-eyed, psychedelic version of The Great Gatsby on May 10th, we’re rocking flapper garb, driving fast cars and drinking gin martinis, cheers old sport!
- Leo Dicaprio takes on the roll of Jay Gatsby, last tackled on the big screen by Robert Redford in 1974.
We’re doing all of these things while streaming the Gatsby soundtrack from NPR. Utilizing his signature MTV-generation quick cuts, Luhrmann creates a fusion of modern hip-hop heavy and big-band era instrumentation that F. Scott Fitzgerald would have been proud of.

Produced by the one and only Hova, Jay-Z, the soundtrack slams together vintage jazz and modern rap and features a slew of pop-artists like Florence and the Machine, Andre 3000, Beyonce and Lana Del Rey.
Matching epic soundtracks with his movies is nothing new for Luhrmann, 2001’s Moulin Rouge combines some of the greatest love songs of all time in a broadway-style bootleg, and his infamous 1996 version of Romeo and Juliet was paired with one of the best make-out soundtracks of all time.
