Remember Macklemore? The Pacific Northwest rapper in a pink polo shirt who came through Bend earlier this month?  

Well, he’s blowing up, and he’s got a message. Beyond his lighthearted songs about his favorite thrift store outfit, Macklemore is politically conscious and completely relevant. Here he is making his television premiere on Ellen performing “Same Love” in support of same-sex marriage.

Macklemore’s home state of Washington will vote on Tuesday on Referendum 74, which will determine the legality of same sex-marriage. “Same Love” makes some hard hitting points about the gay marriage and equal rights debate in relation to hip-hop and politics. It’s a showstopper, and new territory for the hip-hop community. 

Way to go, Macklemore.
